    Abstract: A composite material which has excellent ballistic performance and has improved flexibility. Surprisingly, it has been found that a combination of poly(alpha-olefin) fiber and matrix resin provides these desirable product features. The resin matrix is a block copolymer of a conjugated diene and a vinyl aromatic monomer, preferably a styrene-isoprene-styrene block copolymer, that is applied as an aqueous composition. The fiber has a tenacity of at least about 35 g/d and a tensile modulus of at least about 1200 g/d. The composite has a total density equal to or less than about 100 g/m2 and a stiffness of less than about 2.5 pounds (1.14 kg) for a two layer structure of the composite, and a total areal density equal to or less than about 190 g/m2 and a stiffness of less than about 3.0 pounds (1.36 kg) for a four layer structure of the composite. The Peel Strength for a two layer structure of less than about 1.0 pounds (0.45 kg) for a two layer structure of the composite, and less than about 0.7 pounds (0.32 kg) for a four layer structure of the composite. The process of this invention permits fabrication of these desirable products in a cost-effective manner. Body armor made from the composite has improved flexibility and excellent ballistic characteristics.

    Abstract: A multilayered composite fabric which comprises (a) a first fabric comprising non-woven unidirectionally oriented fibers in a first resin matrix, the fibers comprising high tenacity fibers, the first fabric comprising first and second surfaces; and (b) a second fabric comprising multi-directionally oriented fibers optionally in a second resin matrix, the second fabric also comprising high tenacity fibers, the second fabric having first and second surfaces, the first surface of the second fabric being bonded to the second surface of the first fabric thereby forming the composite fabric. Also described is a method of making such fabric wherein the second fabric layer is used as a support during the manufacturing process and is thereafter consolidated into a single structure with the first fabric layer.

    Abstract: A helmet shell formed from two types of high tenacity fibers in multiple layers of fibrous materials. The fibrous materials are in the form of layers of fibrous networks in a resin matrix. There are a plurality of each type of fibrous layers. Preferably the outer set of fibrous layers is formed from aramid fibers and the inner set of fibrous layers is formed from high tenacity polyolefin fibers. There may also be employed a third type of fibrous material as an additional set of fibers and used as the outer layers of the helmet shell. The third type of fibrous layers is formed from glass fibers that are also in a resin matrix. The helmet is lightweight, has excellent ballistic resistant properties and is useful for both military and non-military applications.

    Abstract: Ballistic resistant materials having improved strength and lighter weights. More particularly, improved ballistic resistant fabrics produced from drawn, high modulus fibers having a reduced fiber diameter and improved physical strength properties, without changing other properties such as fiber chemistry, binder resin type and binder resin content. The fabrics incorporate low denier per filament monofilament fibers, low denier per filament multifilament fibers, or a combination of low denier per filament monofilament fibers and low denier per filament multifilament fibers in a specialized fabric construction to form fine fiber layers and fabrics having enhanced strength and fiber areal density without altering the fabric weight, or having reduced fabric weight without a corresponding reduction in ballistic performance.
