Abstract: Provisioning and access control for communication nodes involves assigning identifiers to sets of nodes where the identifiers may be used to control access to restricted access nodes that provide certain services only to certain defined sets of nodes. In some aspects provisioning a node may involve providing a unique identifier for sets of one or more nodes such as restricted access points and access terminals that are authorized to receive service from the restricted access points. Access control may be provided by operation of a restricted access point and/or a network node. In some aspects, provisioning a node involves providing a preferred roaming list for the node. In some aspects, a node may be provisioned with a preferred roaming list through the use of a bootstrap beacon.

By way of example, network components can generate a system determination list (SDL) for a user terminal (UT) that is customized to access capabilities of the UT and/or current position of the UT. The SDL can be employed by the UT to determine which network access points to camp on, handoff to, or the like. The network components can include a network database that maintains UT subscriber and related home Femto cell information, or such information can be maintained at a network operator's home location register. In some aspects, the information can be obtained over the air from the UT or from a base station serving the UT.

Abstract: A method for maintaining a fingerprint for a wireless network (104) is provided. A first fingerprint is stored at a wireless communications device (102). The first fingerprint identifies a location (B) corresponding to a first communications network based on one or more reference signals from a second communications network. When the wireless communications device (102) is within the location (B), a second fingerprint is determined based on a current measurement by the wireless communication device (102) of the one or more reference signals. Then the first fingerprint is modified based on the second fingerprint.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for determining the quality of service of a network are disclosed. A disclosed methodology for determining quality of service f or a network includes determining at least two metrics reflective of network parameters in at least two different protocol layers of the communication n etwork. The metrics are then compared with respective threshold values, and quality of service for the network is determined based on the comparison of the metrics with the respective threshold values.. Corresponding apparatus e xecuting the methodology are also disclosed.

Abstract: A wireless device is configured to automatically resign from an ad hoc ne twork. In some aspects the resignation may be based on automatic detection o f inactivity associated with the ad hoc network. For example, resignation fr om the ad hoc network may be based on absence of uplink and downlink traffic at a wireless device, absence of open sockets at a wireless device, or a la ck of beacon transmissions by other wireless devices. In the latter case, a lack of beacon transmissions by other wireless devices in the ad hoc network may be indicated by the transmission of a relatively large number of beacon s in succession by a wireless device.
