    Abstract: Polyesters containing terminal carboxyl groups comprising the products of reaction of (a) an aliphatic polyester containing terminal hydroxyl groups, prepared from 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid and from an alcoholic constituent comprising (1) from 10 to 100 equivalents % of a cycloaliphatic diol and (2) from 90 to 0 equivalents % of at least one aliphatic polyol containing a straight or branched chain which has from 2 to 12 carbon atoms, with (b) an aliphatic and/or aromatic dicarboxylic acid or the corresponding anhydride, process for their preparation and heat-curable compositions in powder form based on these polyesters and polyepoxy compounds used for the production of varnishes and paints in powder form. These polyesters yield coatings which have an excellent resistance to inclement weather, combined with remarkable mechanical properties, even when the curing is performed at low temperature.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a process for the preparation of carboxyl group-terminated polyesters, which comprises reacting in one step at elevated temperatures, terephthalic acid and at least one dihydric aliphatic compound and optionally an aromatic polycarboxylic acid having three or more carboxyl groups and/or a polyhydric organic compound having three or more hydroxyl groups and/or a linear aliphatic or cycloaliphatic dicarboxylic acid, the proportions by weight of the respective reactants being such as to produce a polyester having an acid number of from 10 to 25 mg KOH/g and a hydroxyl number of at most 5 mg KOH/g. The present invention also provides a process for preparing a powdered thermosetting coating composition suitable for application as paint or varnish on electricity-conducting articles by electrostatic powder spray methods and fluidized bed coating processes, wherein the carboxyl group-terminated polyester prepared as described above is homogeneously mixed with and epoxy compound containing at least two epoxy groups. The present invention further provides the compositions thus prepared.
