    Abstract: A combination of (A) a nitrogen containing water soluble polymer, (B) a water insoluble film forming polymer, and (C) gas filled, polymer walled microballoons provides a superior thermally releasable coating that (i) can be conveniently and reliably coated from a water based solution and dispersion onto surfaces to be protected against painting, (ii) is reliably stable at ambient temperatures, (iii) even after being coated with many times its own thickness of accumulated paint particles, rapidly disintegrates, along with the accumulated paint coating formed on it, upon contact with hot water, into particles of a size that readily escapes from standard paint booth grate structures, (iv) detackifies any paint particles that escape during distintegration of the combined thermally releasable coating and paint residues accumulated thereon, and (v) disintegrates into particles that float on water, so that they can be readily removed from the grates by immersing the latter in hot water, allowing a few minutes for the disintegration to take effect, and then skimming off the floating solids on the surface of the water.

    Abstract: Solvent free liquid masking compositions comprise from about 5 to about 20 percent by weight of an aliphatic polyol; from about 5 to about 20 percent by weight of a plasticizer; from about 0.1 to about 1 percent by weight of a surfactant; and sufficient water to total 100 percent by weight. A method for protecting selected surfaces from paint in painting operations comprises applying a solvent free liquid masking composition to selected surfaces of an object where paint subsequently applied is not desired; allowing the liquid masking composition to dry, forming a film; painting the object, whereby surfaces carrying the film are protected from the application of paint; and removing the film.

    Abstract: A vehicle masking material and method of use. The masking material in one embodiment includes polyvinyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, glycerine or triethylene glycol, a surfactant, and water. The masking material is applied to a surface which is to be protected from paint overspray or other mechanical process, allowed to dry, and paint is applied. After drying of the paint, the masking material is removed by peeling or water washing.

    Abstract: This invention describes a method of masking a workpiece to prevent the adhesion of a deposited tightly adhering conformal coating formed from the condensation of a vaporous diradical such as paraxylylene on selected portions of the workpiece. Specifically the process of the invention requires the covering of the areas of the workpiece, to which adhesion is not desired, with a non-polymerizing hydrocarbon and placing the covered area in close contact with an open cellular material containing a predominance of interconnecting cells which provides a large surface area for condensation of the unwanted condensate of the diradical, exposing the workpiece to the vaporous diradical, removing the workpiece from the open cellular material and immersing the workpiece in a solvent for swelling and dissolving the hydrocarbon covering.

    Abstract: The instant invention relates to a method of decorating an extruded plastic strip which is used for ornamental purposes. In the method of the invention, a plastic strip is passed through a pair of rollers which emboss the face thereof to be decorated with a raised design. The entire decorative face is then covered with a release agent from the top surface of the raised design. A coloring material is then applied to the entire decorative surface. Excess coloring and the release agent are thereafter washed, peeled, or otherwise removed from the strip. The design is then highlighted by the coloring material thereupon.
