    Abstract: PURPOSE:To achieve the balanced improvement of both electromagnetic characteristics such as an output and a noise and physical characteristics such as corrosion-resistant properties and a travelling performance. CONSTITUTION:A first magnetic layer which contains at least two types of magnetic powder selected from ferromagnetic metal powder whose main component is iron, cobalt-containing iron oxide powder and barium ferrite powder is formed on a substrate and a second magnetic layer which contains needle- shape cobalt-coated iron oxide whose coercive force is not less than 1300Oe is formed on the first magnetic layer to obtain a magnetic recording medium.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To enable use of a binder having dispersibility for a magnetic powder by incorporating a polyurethane resin containing a certain amt. of metal sulfonate groups as the binder into a magnetic layer. CONSTITUTION:Such a polyurethane resin containing metal sulfonate groups by >=0.1 eq./10 and g is incorporated as the binder into the magnetic layer. If the concn. of the metal sulfonate group is >0.1 eq./10 , enough dispersion of the magnetic powder is not obtained. with >=10 eq./10 g of metal sulfonate group, thixotropy of the coating material increases and the coating material is hard for handling. Thereby, the binder having dispersibility for the magnetic powder without an addition of a dispersant can be used.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain such a medium with excellent durability and little abrasion of the magnetic layer by incorporating a specific ester compd. and a copolymer of vinyl chloride and a compd. having -COOH as a polar group into the magnetic layer. CONSTITUTION:The ester compd. expressed by formula I and the copolymer of vinyl chloride and the compd. having a polar group of -COOH or nitrocellulose having the same polar group are incorporated into the magnetic layer essentially comprising magnetic powder and a binder. In formula I, R represents an aliphatic hydrocarbon group with a branched chain with 3 - 10 carbon and R' represents a satd. or unsatd. aliphatic hydrocarbon group with 7 - 21 carbons. This gives more preferable lubricating property and the obtd. medium has significantly improved durability in a wide range of environments.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain such a medium with excellent durability and little abrasion of the magnetic layer by incorporating a specific phosphate copd., magnetic powder subjected to a surface treatment with org. silane compd. having hydolytic alkoxysilane group, and a specific ester compd. into the magnetic layer. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic layer contains the phosphate compd. expressed by formula I, the magnetic powder subjected to the surface treatment with org. silane compd. having hydrolytic alkoxysilane group in one molecule, and the ester compd. expressed by formula II. In formula I, R1 represents a hydrocarbon group with 2 - 28 carbons, A is an alkylene group with 2 - 4 carbons, (n) is 0 or an integer from 1 to 30. In formula II, R represents an aliphatic hydrocarbon group with a branched chain with 3 - 10 carbons and R' represents a satd. aliphatic hydrocarbon group with 7 - 21 carbons. This gives more preferable lubricating property and the obtd. medium has significantly improved durability in a wide range of environments.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the dispersibility of magnetic powder, surface smoothness and durability by consisting a binder of a polyurethane resin produced by using a lactone-modified diol. CONSTITUTION:The binder for a magnetic recording medium consisting of the polyurethane resin formed by using the lactone-modified diol expressed by the formula is used. A magnetic layer constituted by dispersing ferromagnetic powder into such binder is proved on a non-magnetic substrate. The polyure thane resin may be either of the polyurethane resin of which both terminals of the molecule are an isocyanate group and the resin of which one terminal is the isocyanate group and the other terminal is a hydroxyl group. The average mol.wt. thereof is relatively preferably in a 1,000-100,000 range. The proportion of the binder and the pulverous ferromagnetic powder. The performance of both the dispersibility and durability is thereby extremely improved.
