Abstract: An AMPS system facilitates reception and processing of a DS CDMA signal transmitted by a mobile station (125). The AMPS system provides an alternate path for the signal to be received by a DS CDMA receiver (506) system. The DS CDMA receiver system generates a signal compatible with the AMPS system, adjusts the generated signal to be proportional to the DS CDMA signal and inputs the adjusted signal (510) into the AMPS system. The AMPS system then processes the adjusted signal for purposes of handoff of the mobile station (125) from the DS CDMA system to the AMPS system.

Abstract: Communication system attenuating the loss of sound due to a delay (D) undergone when setting up the communication channel, and likewise taking the delay (D) into account. This communication system time-compresses a certain part of the sound transmitted by a user and accumulates this time-compressed sound in a buffer in a FIFO memory (827) at least until the communication channel has been set up. When the channel is set up, the communication system starts transmission of the time-compressed sound stored, and changes to transmission of the normal voice sent when the FIFO memory (827) storing the time-compressed sound is practically empty.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for receiving electromagnetic radiation within a frequency band. The receiving is accomplished by intercepting electromagnetic radiation within the frequency band and converting the intercepted electromagnetic radiation into an electrical signal. Subsequently, a portion of the electrical signal is digitized into digitized signals. Each digitized signal represents the intercepted electromagnetic radiation within a portion of the frequency band. Finally, a composite digitized signal is generated from at least two of the digitized signals. Alternatively, the receiving process may be enhanced by intercepting first electromagnetic radiation within a portion of the frequency band and by intercepting second electromagnetic radiation within another portion of the frequency band. Subsequently, the first and the second electromagnetic radiation is combined into a composite electromagnetic radiation waveform. The composite electromagnetic radiation waveform is converted into an electrical signal which may be processed into digitized signals which form a composite digitized signal.

Abstract: A base-site (304) combines baseband frequency hopping and fast-synthesizer hopping to produce an economical frequency hopping communication system (300). The base-site (304) combines the fast-synthesizer frequency hopping capability of transmitters (307-309) with baseband frequency hopping to produce a frequency hopping communication system (300) which serves the same number of subscribers served by transmitters (208-213) in a purely baseband hopping communication system (200), but with fewer transmitters (307-309). The implementation of frequency-selective cavities (312-317) having very low loss eliminates the need for wideband hybrid combiners (112-114), which in turn eliminates transmitted-signal power loss experienced in a purely fast-synthesizer frequency hopping communication system (100).

Abstract: A communication system having a site (42) employing a plurality of communication channels. Each channel is assigned a desired received signal strength threshold. The selection of a channel may be performed either by the site (42) or the subscriber unit (43a, 43b). In an FDMA environment (50), each separate frequency division channel may be assigned different received signal strength thresholds. In a non- overlapping time interval (TDMA) environment (70), each separate time division channel may be assigned different received signal strength thresholds. In another embodiment (80), a combination of FDMA and TDMA environments can be used.

Abstract: An equalization system for equalizing a corrupted signal is disclosed. The equalization system includes a complex matched filter (400) and a maximum likelihood sequence estimator (MLSE) (405) for removing the effects of phase shift, amplitude variations, intersymbol interference, etc. resulting from multi-pathing and noise contributed by the receiver front end. The system estimates a correlation signal C(t) (505) and synchronizes C(t) 505 to maximize its energy as seen on the taps of the complex matched filter (400). Taps having amplitude coefficients below a predetermined threshold are set to zero to produce a modified CIR estimate. The modified CIR estimate which has had the effects of noise virtually eliminated, is then used to construct the complex matched filter (400) and is also used as input to the MLSE (405) to produce a better equalized data signal.

The sensing circuit detects ( 205 ) either a characteristic of an external environment containing the portable communication device (e.g., a chemical in the air or acceleration of the device) or a characteristic of the portable communication device user (e.g., heart rate or blood sugar content), and generates a signal ( 207 ) representative of a feature of the sensed characteristic. The processor receives the signal and initiates an event based at least on the feature of the sensed characteristic as represented by the signal. Events include, but are not limited to, one or more of the following: alerting the device user, transmitting a signal (e.g., an emergency call) to a remote communication device, re-sensing the characteristic or sensing another characteristic, and modifying a setting or profile of the device.
