Abstract: An information reproducing method and an information reproducing device in which the key renewal block (KRB) of the latest verison is selectively used to encrypt the content to store the encrypted contents in a recording medium. A plural num er of KRBs of different generations and versions are stored in a recording medium. If the latest KRB is detected, it is stored in a memory unit within the recording and/or reproducing device. A plural number of KRBs having plural different generations or versions are stored on the recording medium. With the present method and device, in storing the content in the recording medium, the latest usable one of the KRB in the memory unit of the reproducing device and plural KRBs on the recording medium is detected to acquire an encrypting key, such as a media key, to execute the content encryption. In this manner, the encrypted content based on a KRB of a newer version can at all times be stored on the recording medium.

Abstract: An input is ciphered in at least one of a sector forming circuit 13, a scrambling circuit 14, a header appendage circuit 15, an error correction encoding circuit 16, a modulation circuit 18 and a synchronization appendage circuit 18, used for processing input data for forming a recording signal. Not only the key for ciphering itself in the circuits but also the information as to which of the circuits has been used for ciphering becomes the key for ciphering. This realizes ciphering difficult to decode by a simplified structure.

Abstract: A block key to encrypt block data is generated using an ATS (arrival time stamp) appended to each of TS (transport stream) packets included in a transport stream correspondingly to the arrival time of the TS packet. The ATS is a random data depending upon an arrival time, and so a block-unique key can be generated, which enhances the protection against data cryptanalysis. A block key is generated from a combination of an ATS with a key unique to a device, recording medium or the like such as a master key, disc-unique key, title-unique key or the like. Since an ATS is used to generate a block key, any area for storage of an encryption key for each block may not be provided in a recording medium.

Abstract: A content key, an authentication key, and a program data etc. are transmitted with an enabling key block (EKB) in an encrypted key constitution of a tree structure. The EKB has a constitution in which a device as a leaf of the tree holds a leaf key and a limited node key, and a specific enabling key block (EKB) is generated and distributed to a group specified by a specific node to limit devices that can be renewed. As the devices that do not belong to the group cannot perform decryption, the security for distributing keys etc. can be secured. Thus, distribution of various kinds of keys or data is executed in an encryption key constitution of a tree structure to realize an information processing system and method enabling to distribute data efficiently and safely.

Abstract: When the recording mode of an information recording/playback device is a cognizant mode which analyzes embedded copy control information, the information recording/playback device performs content encryption using a content-encryption key generated by using a cognizant key as a content-encryption-key generating key in the cognizant mode. When the recording mode of the information recording/playback device is a non-cognizant mode which does not analyze the embedded copy control information, the information recording/playback device performs content encryption using a content-encryption key generated by using a cognizant key as a content-encryption-key generating key in the non-cognizant mode. By using these techniques, the above two recording modes are clearly distinguished and separately executed. This prevents an encryption mode indicator as copy control information and embedded copy control information from being mismatched.

Abstract: Sub-trees separated according to the data processing capability of a device are defined in a key tree in which keys are assigned to the roots, nodes, an d leaves which are devices of a tree. A management entity of each sub-tree creates a sub make-effective key block effective in the entity. A key issuin g center creates a make-effective key block decodable only by an entity having common capability according to the capability information on the entity. Eac h entity manages the partia trees (sub-trees) of the key tree, creates a sub make-effective key block according to only the nodes of the sub-trees or the keys corresponding to the leaves, and creates a make-effective key block decodable only by the selected entity by using the sub make-effective key block. Thus, a make-effective key block can be created in accordance with th e data processing capability of a device and distributed, and the key tree hierarchical structure can be dividedly managed.
