Abstract: A portable scanning head emits and receives light from a light-emitting diode (10) to read symbols, such as bar-code symbols. The optics (12,18) within the scanner are operative for focusing a light beam (11) and the view of a light sensor (17) in different planes (13,22) exteriorly of a scanner housing. Imaging means are provided in the unit for imaging a viewing window. The viewing window has an area smaller than that of the scan spot. The system can employ an LED (10) as a light source and tolerate the relatively large-sized (on the order of millimeters) scan spot without sacrificing reading performance since the photodiode (17) "sees" only that portion of the scan spot visible through the viewing window.

Abstract: A laser diode in a scanner is deactuated during part of each scan to conserve power and to increase the working lifetime of the diode and of a battery for powering the scanner. The dead zone in which specular reflection may prevent a successful reading of the symbol is minimized. The scanner includes a head which cannot be disassembled unless an electrical cable connecting the head to the remainder of the scanner is first removed.

Abstract: The depth of modulation of an analog electrical signal generated by a photodetector during scanning of a bar code symbol in the field of bar code scanning is enhanced under circumstances where the modulation of the analog signal has been degraded, for example, by an oversized sampling aperture in relation to the widths of the symbol elements. The analog signal has high frequency components whose Low amplitudes are increased in magnitude prior to being conducted to a digitizer. The effect of noise introduced during reading of the bar code is cancelled by comparing in the comparator, the modulation-enhanced analog signal with the second derivative signal derived from the modulation-degraded unenhanced analog signal. The output of the comparator is a digital output signal having a logical level dependent on the amplitude of the enhanced analog signal at each zero crossing of the second derivative signal. The digital output signal is a closer representation of the code read by the scanner.

Abstract: Laser light reflected from a bar code symbol pattern is detected by a photodetector mounted in a portable scanning head of a laser scanning system. By selecting appropriate threshold values on the analog signal generated by the photodetector, the analog signal is converted to a series of pulses, each pulse width accurately corresponding to the width of a bar from the scanned pattern. A plurality of functions can be determined from the series of pulses, each function being independently selected by keyboard entry from the head, displayed on the head, and/or recorded by a printer remote from the head. Single line or multiple line scans in two orthogonal directions relative to the pattern may be selected. A bimorph or speaker-type oscillatory element may be utilized as a miniature scanning element. Circuitry for synchronizing scanning along both axes, and for generating a signal to drive the bimorph in a uniform, constant velocity manner is also disclosed.
