Abstract: A process for dewatering hydrocyanic acid by distillation, which includes distilling crude hydrocyanic acid containing from 50 to 99.9% by weight of HCN, from 0.1 to 40% by weight of water, from 0 to 15% by weight of carbon oxides and optionally from 0.01 to 1% by weight of an involatile stabilizer, at a pressure of from 1 bar to 2.5 bar, a bottom temperature of from 100° C. to 130° C. and a top temperature of from 25° C. to 54° C., in the absence of a volatile stabilizer, in a distillation column to obtain a top draw stream containing purified, anhydrous hydrocyanic acid and carbon oxides and a bottom draw stream including water and, optionally, the involatile stabilizer.

Abstract: A process for the recovery of a Lewis acid from a reaction mixture prepared by hydrocyanation of an olefinically unsaturated compound to form a nitrile that under certain conditions of quantities, pressure and temperature exhibit a miscibility gap with water, in the presence of a catalyst system containing a Lewis acid and a complex compound comprises phase separation and distillation. A process for the recovery of a Lewis acid from a reaction mixture (I), prepared by hydrocyanation of an olefinically unsaturated compound to form a nitrile that under certain conditions of quantities, pressure and temperature exhibit a miscibility gap with water, in the presence of a catalyst system containing a Lewis acid and a complex compound comprising a phosphorous containing ligand and a central atom is characterized in that: (a) the complex compound is separated from the mixture (I) to yield a mixture (II); (b) mixing of the mixture (II) with water under pressure and temperature to form a phase (III) that contains a higher water content than the nitrile and a phase (IV) having a higher nitrile content than water whereby the phase (III) has a higher content of Lewis acid than phase (IV); (c) mixing of the phase (III) with a liquid diluent (V) that does not form an azeotrope with water and whose b.pt. is higher than that of water or under certain conditions of pressure forms an azeotrope or a heteroazeotrope with water; (d) distillation of the mixture of (III) and (V) to yield a mixture (VI) having a higher water content than the diluent (V) and a mixture (VII) having a higher diluent (V) content than water whereby the mixture (VII) has a higher Lewis acid content than the mixture (VI) and; (e) addition of the mixture (VII) to a hydrocyanation of an olefinically unsaturated compound to form a nitrile that under certain conditions of quantities, pressure and temperature exhibit a miscibility gap with water, in the presence of a catalyst system containing a Lewis acid and a complex compound comprising a phosphorous containing ligand and a central atom.

Abstract: Preparation of organodiphosphonites comprises reaction of one mole of an organo phosphorous chloride with one mole of an alcohol in the absence of an organic base at -25 to +10 deg C, treatment of the product with at least one equivalent of an organic base, and addition of a (hetero)aryl diol. A process for the production of organodiphosphonites of formula (I) comprises: (a) reaction of one mole of R PCl2 with one mole of R OH in the absence of an organic base at -25 to +10 deg C; (b) treatment of the product from step (a) with at least one equivalent of an organic base (with respect to (w.r.t.) R PCl2) to yield (R -O)R PCl and an essentially insoluble salt of the organic base with HCl, at -25 to +10 deg C; and (c) reaction of (R -O)R PCl) with a compound HO-Z-OH, where in the case that less than two equivalents of base were added in step (b), further base is added in an amount such that at least two equivalents (w.r.t. one mole of R PCl2) are added in steps (a), (b) and (c) at -25 to +10 deg C.
