    Abstract: Method and apparatus for congestion control in a wireless communication system. In one embodiment, the status of a congestion bit indicates the type of adjustment, such as increase or decrease, to be performed at an access terminal to determine the next data rate for transmissions on the reverse link. The status of the congestion bit is determined by comparing a congesti on parameter to a predetermined threshold (186). One embodiment implements an outerloop threshold having a margin with respect to the desired congestion metric threshold. The outerloopthreshold is adjusted in response to comparin g a measured congestion metric to the desired threshold (192, 194, 196). The outerloop threshold adjustment maintains the congestion metric to within a predetermined probalility of exceeding the desired threshold.

    Abstract: In a communication system wherein packetized data is transmitted to remote stations in a channel sensitive manner, a preamble must be transmitted with each discrete data transmission to the remote station. Method and apparatus are presented herein for generating an optimized preamble structure for use with transmissions of packetized data. An optimized preamble structure is one that is easily detectable and decodable, yet occupies a small fractional overhead of the entire transmission to the remote station. Information that needs to be carried by a preamble are used to create a basic structural unit, which is then redundantly permuted.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to wireless voice and data communication systems. More particularly, the present invention relates to novel and improved methods and apparatus for transmitting data traffic on a communication channel. One such method comprises the steps of packaging a data payload into a plurality of subpackets; transmitting a first subpacket to a remote station; if the channel conditions are optimal, transmitting a remaining portion of the plurality of subpackets to the remote station; and if the channel conditions are not optimal within a predetermined time duration, then transmitting a remaining portion of the plurality of subpackets during unfavorable channel conditions.
