    Abstract: PURPOSE:To select a winding angle so that it becomes a desired angle, to simplify the constitution of an optical tape traveling mechanism and to obtain a reproducing device whose constitution is simple as a whole by branching and supplying a light beam to plural optical heads mounted on a rotating drum. CONSTITUTION:The plural optical heads 3A, 3B and 11 are arranged on the rotating drum 8. By branching the light beam LA1 with the aid of a light branching means 10 and outputting it to the plural optical heads 3A, 3B and 11, the light beam LA1 is supplied to the plural heads 3A, 3B and 11 by one light source 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7. Then, the constitution of a whole optical system is simplified. Besides, by arranging the plural optical heads 3A, 3B and 11 on the rotating drum 8 and making the winding angle of an optical recording medium 15 small, the traveling mechanism of the optical recording medium 15 is simplified by amount of that. Thus, the whole constitution is simplified.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To enable the reproducing of recording information by providing a driving device that makes retire a plate of 1/4 wave length from an optical path between a recording medium and a polarization beam splitter when a beam reflected by the recording medium is detected. CONSTITUTION:A beam 13 transmitted a polarization beam splitter 14 transmits an objective lens 15 and if focused on the recording surface of a disk 15. However, when the disk is an optical one, a plate of 1/4 wave length 17 is positioned in the optical path between the polarization beam splitter 14 and the objective lens 15 by the driving device. When the disk 16 is a photomagnetic disk, the plate of 1/4 wave length is made retire from the optical path by the driving device. The beam 13 that is reflected by the disk 16 and transmits the objective lens 15 and farther, reflected by the polarization beam splitter 14 transmits a plate of 1/2 wave length and is made incident on a polarization beam splitter 22. Thereby, it is possible to reproduce the recording information from both of the recording media of reflectance of changeable type and of plane of polarization of rotatable type.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To eliminate the DC fluctuation of a tracking error signal by using a beam incident part of a header part as a tilted part so that a side beam incident to the header of a semiconductor laser is reflected and not made incident again to a recording medium thereby forming the reflected beam with nearly main beam only. CONSTITUTION:The face of the header 11 onto which the side beam via a collimator lens 2 is made incident is formed tiltedly so that its reflection beam is not made incident again in the collimator lens 2. In using not a coarse face but a mirror surface for the tilted part 11S in this case so as to avoid irregular reflection, the effect is large. Further, the reflected light of the side beam from the header 11 does not enter the collimator lens 2 by deciding the relation of thetah+thetaG-thetac>0, where thetah is an angle of the tilted part 11S to a face perpendic ular to the main beam, thetaG is an angle between the main beam and the side beam, N.Ac is the N.A of the collimator lens 2 and theta=sin NAc.

SOLUTION: When the liquid crystal element is used as a 1/2 wavelength plate 104, two liquid crystal elements 104A, 104B are arranged so that the alignment directions of each liquid crystal molecule are orthogonally crossed. Then, the difference (A-B) between the phase difference A given by one liquid crystal element 104A to the polarization parallel to the alignment with respect to the polarization orthogonally crossed to the alignment and the phase difference B given by another liquid crystal element 104B to the polarization parallel to the alignment with respect to the polarization orthogonally crossed to the alignment, is expressed as l/2+nλ. Even when the temperature change is generated, the phase differences for the liquid crystal elements 104A, 104B given respectively to the polarization parallel to the alignment respect to the polarization orthogonally crossed to the alignment are varied but these varied amounts are almost the same. Consequently, the phase difference given by two alignments is λ/2+nλ and unchanged.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately correct wave front aberration caused in an optical system by a liquid crystal element without being affected by a quarter wave plate disposed on an optical path from a light source via a recording medium to a light detector. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal element A4 is disposed at an advancing light path (a first light path) from the laser light source 1 to an optical disk 8 so as to align a liquid crystal in a polarization direction of light made incident into the optical disk 8 to correct the aberration of advancing light. Separately from the liquid crystal element A4, a liquid crystal element B10 is additionally disposed at returning light path (a second light path) from the quarter plate 5 to the light detector 13 so as to align the liquid crystal in the polarization direction of returning light to correct the aberration of the returning light. Thus, since the polarization states of advancing light and returning light are different from each other by 90 degrees, respective aberrations are independently corrected.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical recording medium for a near field system which has high intensity of reproduced signals and which is hardly damaged on the surface, and to provide a production method of the medium and an optical recording device equipped with that optical recording medium. SOLUTION: The optical recording medium consists of a substrate 11, reflection film 12 formed on the substrate, recording layer 14 formed on the reflection film, and first protective layer 15 formed on the recording layer 14. In the medium, information is recorded and reproduced by irradiating the recording layer 14 with light from an optical system through the first protective layer 15 side. Further, a surface protective layer 16 is formed on the first protective layer 15. The gap between the surface protective layer 16 and the optical system presents a near field, and the surface protective layer 16 has a specified refractive index and film thickness to mitigate changes in the reproducing signal intensity caused by changes in the gap, and the layer preferably consists of a silicon oxide film having >=100 nm film thickness. The invention also provides a production method of the medium and an optical recording device equipped with that optical recording medium.
