Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To edit video/audio image quality enhanced or sound quality enhanced data without performing overwrite since data enormously increase as video/audio image quality/sound quality is enhanced, a track width becomes extremely narrow even in a helical tape recording system and overwrite onto a certain specific track is physically disabled in a conventional editing method.
SOLUTION: An HDD 28 capable of current large-capacity and high-speed transfer is used to perform video/audio editing on the HDD 28 without compressing data, and all the data regarded necessary for editing are pumped up from a tape storage 24 capable of large-capacity and high-speed transfer and high-speed access to the HDD 28 to perform video/audio editing. Namely, a portion desired to edit is temporarily copied onto an editing medium 25 of the tape storage 24 built in an apparatus, and edited using an HDD 28 + PC 29 of an external editing system 31 and editing data 33 are then copied onto an original master tape 25, so that "overwrite" on a "defective position is not performed. Thus, accurate frame position detection or time required therefor is obviated, thereby performing speedy editing work.

Core widths CW of the recording heads W2, W3, W4 are each made to be a track pitch TP +α1 and formed to be overlapped with the track pitch TP of the W1-W3 by α1, so that the specified recording width TP can be surely obtained, and the core width CW of the W1 is formed into the track pitch TP +α2 (α2>α1) while taking the fluctuation of the head position one round after into account, then the recording pattern without gap is obtained.

In the magnetic recording medium, the product Mr.t of the amount of residual magnetization Mr and the film thickness(t) of the magnetic layer is set to be 0.5-3.0 memu/cm2 and, the track pitch of recording tracks formed to the magnetic layer is set to be 1-5 μm. At this time, the thickness of the magnetic layer 2 can be controlled by changing a line speed in a thin film form apparatus, and the amount of residual magnetization can be controlled by changing an amount of oxygen introduced during the film formation.
