A steel cord (10) for reinforcing elastomeric articles. The steel cord (10) has a plurality of strands (14). Each strand (14) has a core (20) and a sheath (22). The sheath (22) includes a plurality of steel filaments that are helically wrapped about the core (20). A first strand (16) extends longitudinally through the center of the steel cord (10). The remaining strands (18) are helically wrapped about the first strand (16). The core (20) of the first strand (16) includes a plurality of filaments twisted together. In a preferred embodiment, the core (20) of the first strand (16) includes three filaments twisted together.

A pneumatic tyre (1) comprises a tread reinforcing belt (7) made of metallic cords (10), wherein each of the metallic cords is made up of six to twelve metallic filaments (F) whose diameter (d) is not less than 0.15 mm but less than 0.25 mm, the six to twelve metallic filaments (F) are grouped into a plurality of bunches (B) each including two to four filaments (F), the filaments of each bunch are twisted together at a first twisting pitch (Pb), the bunches (B) are twisted together into the cord at a final twist pitch (Pc) of from 10 to 40 mm, the first twisting pitch (Pb) is more than the final twist pitch (Pc), and the bunches (B) each include at least one waved filament (FA) which is two-dimensionally waved at wave pitches (Pw) in a range of from 5 to 30 times the diameter (d) of the filament and a wave height (h) in a range of from 0.2 to 3.0 times the diameter (d).

Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel cord for reinforcing a rubber article, capable of being improved in durability in running at a high speed and a high load, by preventing fatigue fracture of the cord caused by the high speed and the high load, without having a problem of deterioration in strength by vulcanization, and to provide a pneumatic radial tire given by using the article. SOLUTION: This steel cord for reinforcing the rubber article has a multiple twisting structure composed of a central structure 1 and at least one layer of outer layer strands 2 which are twisted around the central structure, wherein the central structure is formed out of two or more strands 10 which are twisted with one another, a diameter of the strand composing the central structure is larger than a diameter of the outer layer strand, and a number (N) of the outer layer strands satisfies a condition expressed by formula as follows: N>2n+5 (n is the number of the strands composing the central structure).
