    Abstract: The dehydration of maleic acid (I) to maleic anhydride (II) was improved by use of sulfolane (III) as solvent. Thus, heating 3 moles I, 3 moles II, 10% III, and 100ml O-xylene at 140≦̸C-150≦̸C gives II with dehydration rate 2.83 mole/hr and yield in 1 hr 70% ; compared with 1.42 and 35, resp., in the absence of III. III was also an excellent solvent for byproducts and residues, preventing fouling of app.
