Abstract: Flowing waters are dosed with acrolein to prevent excessive plant and algal growth. In order to avoid transport of acrolein, the process according to the invention, using the apparatus according to the invention, generates acrolein at the site of use by deacetylization of an acrolein acetal in the presence of an aqueous mineral acid, for which no electrical energy is required. According to the invention an acrolein acetal solution and an aqueous mineral acid solution are transported from pressure-resistant storage vessels (1) and (2) into a mixing chamber (11) by applying a pressure from a pressurized gas cylinder (3) and the mixture is passed through a deacetalization reactor; the reactor to be used comprises a tubular (14) and a vessel-like (15) part.

Abstract: Acrolein copolymers prepared from acrolein and one or more polyhydric alcohols, which will release monomeric acrolein in an aqueous system and hence have a prolonged effect on microorganisms. The copolymer is prepared by adding acrolein to a reaction medium containing one or more polyhydric alcohols and a catalyst in dissolved form, while not allowing the temperature of the reaction medium to rise above 50.degree.C. The acrolein-releasing copolymer may be used in aqueous systems as a biocide.

According to the invention, use is made of a composition releasing acraldhyde in contact with water at the point of use. The composition of the invention contains an acraldehyde acetal, preferably 2-vinyl-2, 3-dioxolane, and a compound hydrolysable to an acide with a pKs of lower than 4, especially one from the range of organic acid anhydrides, organic acid halides and inorganic halogen compounds forming hydrogen halides on hydrolysis.

Abstract: The direct dosing of aqueous solutions with acrolein as a microbiocide is problematic because of the associated laborious safety measures and the hitherto known use of reaction mixtures from the deacetalisation has proven not to be very economical. … According to the invention, aqueous solutions can be dosed in a simple, safe and economical manner with acrolein at a sufficient concentration level to be active as a biocide by cleaving acrolein acetals in the aqueous phase in the presence of a strongly acid deacetalisation catalyst into acrolein and the alcohol component, continuously removing the resulting acrolein from the deacetalisation mixture and transferring the acrolein into the aqueous solution to be dosed using an inert gas stream or a liquid jet pump with the aqueous solution to be dosed as the jet liquid.

Abstract: The direct handling of acrolein for combating microbial, plant and animal parasites in water and soil is problematic owing to the potential risks posed by acrolein. According to the invention, an easy-to-handle acrolein-releasing composition is used, the acrolein being released at the site of use owing to contact with water. This composition contains (i) an acrolein acetal having a C1 to C6 alcohol with 1 to 4 hydroxyl groups and (ii) a chemically compatible acid which is soluble therein and has a pKs value of less than 4 and (iii) is anhydrous. A preferred composition contains as acetal 2-vinyl-1,3-dioxolane, as acid, anhydrous oxalic acid, fumaric acid or maleic acid or a mixture of mono and di(C1 to C3)alkylphosphate and additionally a non-ionic surfactant.

Abstract: Liquid acrolein, whose hazardous properties make handling difficult, is used to dose aqueous systems with acrolein in a biocidally effective concentration. Disclosed are agents which increase the ease and safety of acrolein handling and which are characterized by a content of 30 to 95% by weight acrolein and 5 to 70% by weight inorganic carrier materials. Silicas are the preferred carrier materials. The powdery or highly viscous mixture of substances will preferably exist in molded form and is additionally provided with a cladding that is impermeable to acrolein vapor. In dosing the aqueous systems, the agents are introduced directly in the water whereupon the acrolein is released.
