    Abstract: An isolated nucleic acid (I) from Corynebacterium glutamicum encoding a sugar metabolism and oxidative phosphorylation (SMP) protein, or a portion of it, providing that the nucleic acid does not consist of any of the F-designated genes, given in the specification, is new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an isolated C. glutamicum nucleic acid that comprises one of 391 sequences (A), given in the specification, or a portion of it, providing the nucleic acid does not consist of any of the F-designated genes; (2) an isolated nucleic acid which encodes a polypeptide with one of 391 sequences (B), given in the specification, providing the nucleic acid does not consist of any of the F-designated genes; (3) an isolated nucleic acid which encodes a naturally occurring allelic variant of a polypeptide with a sequence of (B), providing that the nucleic acid does not consist of any of the F-designated genes; (4) an isolated nucleic acid comprising a nucleotide which is 50 % homologous to a nucleotide sequence of (A) or a portion of it, providing the nucleic acid does not consist of any of the F-designated genes; (5) an isolated nucleic acid comprising a fragment of 15 nucleotides of a nucleic acid with a sequence of (A), providing the nucleic acid does not consist of any of the F-designated genes; (6) an isolated nucleic acid which hybridizes (I) or (1) - (5) under stringent conditions; (7) an isolated nucleic acid comprising (I) or (1) - (6) or a portion of them and a nucleotide sequence encoding a heterologous polypeptide; (8) a vector comprising (I) or (1) - (7); (9) a host cell transfected with (8); (10) producing a polypeptide comprising culturing (9); (11) an isolated SMP polypeptide from C. glutamicum, or a portion of it; (12) an isolated polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence of (B), providing that the sequence is not encoded by any of the F-designated genes; (13) an isolated polypeptide which is encoded by a nucleic acid comprising a nucleotide sequence that is 50 % homologous to a sequence of (A), providing that the nucleic acid does not consist of any of the F-designated nucleic acids; (14) an isolated polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence which is 50 % homologous to a sequence of (B), providing the sequence is not encoded by any of the F-designated genes; (15) producing a fine chemical comprising culturing a cell containing (8); (16) producing a fine chemical comprising culturing a cell whose genomic DNA has been altered by the inclusion of (I) or (1) - (7); (17) diagnosing for the presence or activity of C. diphtheriae in a subject comprising detecting the presence of one of (A) or (B), providing the sequences are not or are not encoded by any of the F-designated sequences; (18) a host cell comprising a nucleic acid of (A), where the nucleic acid has been disrupted; (19) a host cell comprising a nucleic acid of (A), where the nucleic acid comprises a nucleic acid modification; and (20) a host comprising a nucleic acid of (A), where the regulatory region is modified relative to the wild-type regulatory region of the molecule.

    Abstract: Polynucleotide (I) encodes a protein (II) that is associated with transmembrane transport and/or is a transmembrane protein and is isolatable from Ashbya gossypii. Independent claims are also included for: (1) oligonucleotides (ON) that hybridize to (I), particularly under stringent conditions; (2) polynucleotides (Ia) that hybridize to ON, particularly under stringent conditions, and encode a gene product from the genus Ashbya or its functional equivalent; (3) polypeptides (IIa) encoded by (I), or its fragments, or having an amino acid (aa) sequence that includes at least 10 consecutive aa from any of 24 sequences reproduced or their functional equivalents; (4) expression cassettes (EC) containing (I), ON or (Ia) linked to regulatory sequences; (5) recombinant vector containing at least one EC; (6) prokaryotic or eukaryotic host transformed with at least one vector of (5), or in which at least one gene encoding (IIa) is modulated, or in which the biological activity of (IIa) is altered; (7) method for identifying effector targets for modulating microbial production of vitamin B2 or its precursors or derivatives; (8) method for modulation of microbial production of vitamin B2 or its precursors or derivatives by treatment with an effector that interacts with (IIa) or nucleic acid encoding it; (9) effectors (X) for (IIa) or nucleic acid encoding it; and (10) Microbial production of vitamin B2 or its precursors or derivatives using a host cell as in (6).
