    Abstract: A method and system wherein timeslots designated in a wireless communication system as Common Physical Channel (CPCH) timeslots may be reused for user traffic. A CPCH timeslot used in a first cell (102) may be reused by a secon d cell (104), assuming the first and second cells transmit control information in different CPCH timeslots, for user traffic. The second cell is permitted to reuse the timeslot in which the first cell is transmitting control informati on so long as the second cell's reuse of that timeslot does not degrade recepti on of control information in the first cell.

    Abstract: A method and communication system (e.g., a time-division duplex (TDD) system) that uses adaptive antennas at the base stations to monitor metrics associated with the quality of one or more common physical channel (CPCH) timeslots, so as to determine whether to reuse some or all of the CPCH timeslots to transmit a dedicated physical channel (DPCH). If it is determined to reuse some or all of the CPCH timeslots, an additional determination is made as to what limit to apply on the DPCH transmission powers. Adaptive antennas may be used at the base stations to allow the system to reuse some or all of the CPCH timeslots to transmit DPCH, thus improving the overall capacity of the system while maintaining the CPCH coverage and quality at a desired level throughout the system.

A WTRU (100) PERFORMS A MEASUREMENT OF AT LEAST ONE PARAMETER AND GENERATES A CQI (206) BASED ON THE MEASUREMENT. THE WTRU (100) THEN TRANSMITS THE CQI (206) VIA A RANDOM ACCESS CHANNEL, RACH. THE CQI (206) MAY BE TRANSMITTED USING AN RACH PREAMBLE. A PLURALITY OF SIGNATURE SEQUENCES MAY BE DIVIDED INTO A PLURALITY OF GROUPS. THE WTRU (100) MAY SELECT ONE GROUP BASED ON THE CQI (206) AND RANDOMLY SELECT A SIGNATURE SEQUENCE AMONG SIGNATURE SEQUENCES IN THE SELECTED GROUP FOR TRANSMITTING THE RACH PREAMBLE.
