    Abstract: A system and method is taught for controlling the power level of transmissions within a communication system having a base station, a mobile station, a communication channel, and a pilot channel. The mobile station determines a signal strength value according to a communication signal received by way of the communication channel. A pilot channel signal is determined according to a pilot signal transmitted by way of the pilot channel. The signal to noise ratio of the communication signal is determined according to the determined signal strength value and the pilot channel signal. The power level of a transmission is controlled according to the signal to noise ratio. The noise level in a communication channel within the communication system is estimated. The pilot channel signal includes pilot energy and pilot noise components. The pilot energy component is removed to provide a remaining pilot signal. Communication system operations are controlled according to the remaining pilot signal. The power levels of transmissions are controlled by determining the signal to noise ratio of a signal within the communication channel and determining a difference signal. The difference signal is formed by determining the difference between determined and desired signal to noise ratios. The difference signal is transmitted between the base station and the mobile station. The pilot channel has at least one frame and the power control signal is inserted into the frame. Thus, information representing the strength of the communication signal is transmitted to the base by way of the pilot channel within the frame. The pilot channel can have two information frames for transmitting the power control signal a plurality of times.

    Abstract: A spread spectrum receiver subsystem for utilization in a CDMA cellular telephone having a searcher receiver for scanning the time domain so as to use the PN processing gain and time discrimination properties of spread spectrum coding to determine the location in the time domain and the received signal strength of multiple receptions of a pilot signal traveling upon one or more physical propagation paths to reception. The searcher receiver provides a control signal indicative of the received pilot signals of greatest strength and corresponding time relationship. A data receiver receives spread spectrum communication signals accompanying each received pilot signal and is responsive to the searcher control signal for acquiring and demodulating a spread spectrum communication signal, concomitant with the pilot signal of greatest signal strength, and thus providing a corresponding information bearing encoded output signal.

    Abstract: A system and method for assembling a single data stream from multiple instances of that data stream is described. Data transmitted from a cellular telephone subscriber unit is received by a set of base transceiver stations. Each base transceiver station performs various error detection procedures on segments of the data referred to as frames. These error detection procedures may include CRC check sum verification, Yamamoto metric calculation, re-encoded signal error rate calculation, or a combination thereof. The results of these error detection procedures are placed into a frame quality metric. The frame, frame quality metric, a time stamp and an address are placed into a packet that is transmitted from each base transceiver station to a base station controller which matches packets attempting to transmit the same information using the time stamp and selects one frame from the packets for further processing based on the associated frame quality metric.

    Abstract: In one embodiment of method and appartus for determining loading in a communication system, the communication system accumulates a power control commands series and corresponding transmit gain adjustments series between a base station and a designated remote station, under regular operating conditions. After transmissions form the remaining remote stations are interrupted, the communication system repeats the accumulation, and determines the loading according to the accumulated series. Alternatively, the communication system measures power of a test signal injected into base station receiver, under regular operating conditions. After transmissions form the remote stations are interrupted, the communication system repeats the measurement, and determines the loading according to the two measurements. Alternatively, the communication system measures gain of an AGC at the base station's receiver, under regular operating conditions. After transmissions form the remote stations are interrupted, the communication system repeats the measurement, and determines the loading according to the two measurements.
