Abstract: A speech-recognition system for recognizing isolated words includes pre-processing circuitry (3) for performing analog-to-digital conversion and cepstral analysis, and a plurality of neural networks (12-14) which compute discriminant functions based on polynomial expansions. The system may be implemented using either hardware or software or a combination thereof. The speech wave-form of a spoken word is analyzed and converted into a sequence of data frames. The sequence of frames is partitioned into data blocks, and the data blocks are then broadcast to a plurality of neural networks. Using the data blocks, the neural networks compute polynomial expansions. The output of the neural networks is used to deternime the identity of the spoken word. The neural networks utilize a training algorithm which does not require repetitive training and which yields a global minimum to each given set of training examples.

Abstract: In a wireless and/or wireline communications system (100), a method (400-536) and apparatus (200) for minimizing an amount of data (300) communicated between a source device (107, 108, 112 or 114) and a destination device (107, 108, 112 or 114) in order to modify an electronic document stored at said destination device. Said method and/or apparatus employs method steps and apparatus structure for editing a version of the electronic document stored at the source device via a set of input commands to create an edited version of the document. Thereafter, the set of input commands is transmitted to the destination device in order to modify the version of the electronic document stored at the destination device when the set of input commands is smaller in size than edited version of the document.

Abstract: The method of the present invention generally validates a communication link in a communication system. In particular, the method validates a communication link between a cordless base station and authorization and call routing equipment by authenticating the cordless base station to communicate with said authorization equipment (603) and authenticating the authorization equipment to communicate with the cordless base station (604). Preferably, the step of authenticating the cordless base station is based upon a first random number generated within the authorization equipment (502) and the step of authenticating the authorization equipment is based upon a second random number generated within the cordless base station (504). A communication link is allowed between the cordless base station and the authorization equipment when both the cordless base station and the authorization equipment have been authenticated (614).

Abstract: Data to be transmitted from an information source (301), associated with a local/wide area network (303), to a target destination (317) is formatted into a plurality of data packets. Based on a message type of the data packets, either a circuit-switched network (311) or a packet-switched network (309) is selected. When the circuit-switched network is chosen, a circuit-switched channel (314) is established to the target destination, and the data packets are transmitted to the target destination via the circuit-switched channel. When the packet-switched network is chosen, a packet-switched channel (313) is established to the target destination, and the data packets are transmitted to the target destination via the packet-switched channel.

Abstract: The method of the present invention provides efficient aggregation of link metrics for a subnetwork (102, 202, 302) in a communication network (100, 200, 300) having a plurality of interconnected subnetworks (102, 202, 302) that includes nodes (A, B, C, D) and links. Link metric values are summarized on a full-mesh topology (202) and encoded by a spanning tree topology (1004). The method encodes the link metric information contained in full-mesh topology with minimum compromise in the capability to recover it.

Abstract: A communication system has a portable cellular cordless (PCC) radiotelephone (101) which receives a data stream from a cordless base station (115) when the PCC (101) is not engaged in a telephone call. The data stream has a repeat indication field (508) and a message field (506) that the PCC (101) uses to determine if the message has already been received. If the PCC (101) determines the message was already received, the PCC (101) turns off its receiver (401) for a duration of time slightly less than the message field time. This results in a power savings for the PCC (101).

Abstract: A communication system has a PCC (101) which receives a data stream from a cordless base station (115). The cordless base station (115) transmits an indication in the data stream that it is going to beguin a scan. While the cordless base station (115) is scanning, the PCC (101) performs a scan of its own. The PCC (101) also performs a scan when it determines that a message is a repeat and has been previously received.

Abstract: A method of tuning a duplex filter (500). First, the center frequency of at least one filter of a duplex filter (10) is measured (502). Next, the difference between the measured center frequency and a desired center frequency is determined (504). And, third the duplex filter is tuned (506) by selectively removing a substantially planar layer of dielectric material for a top surface (14) of the filter (10), whereby the frequency characteristics are modified.
