Abstract: A method and apparatus for utilizing voice channel transceivers (1004) as temporary scanning receivers in a handoff event for a cellular radiotelephone system. Voice channel transceiver identifications are stored in link lists (1702) according to priority, sectorization, and last use. When a signal strength measurement is required, those cell sectors having available voice channel transceivers (1004) are identified and a table providing optimum transceiver selection is utilized to select those voice channel transceivers (1004) which will make the signal strength measurement.

Abstract: A method of the present invention is used for simultaneous transmission and/or reception of multiple different communication resources, with frequency allocations (FA1...FA8) and (FAA...FAH). A radio frequency device (901) of the present invention comprises a transmitter (903) which comprises a modulator (905) and a receiver (907) which comprises a demodulator (909) with frequency and time assignment as shown. Combined frequency and time division multiplexing is used for the transmission, for example, FA1, FA2, FA5, and FA8 are handled using a FDM technique. Frequency allocations FA3 and FA4 are combined into a single TDM resource.

Abstract: The present invention addresses the need for an apparatus and method for facilitating and performing distributed speech processing in a wireless communication system (100, 200). The present invention encompasses communication infrastructure embodiments (101, 201) that facilitate distributed speech processing by establishing voice and data pathways to support distributed speech processing services. The present invention also encompasses a communication unit (102, 202) that performs distributed voice recognition and distributed speech synthesis via the communication infrastructure (101, 201). The communication unit (102, 202) requests communication services from the communication infrastructure (101, 201) that support both voice and data communication and utilizes a data connection to a distributed speech processing unit (116, 216) to perform distributed voice recognition and distributed speech synthesis.

Abstract: A data message transmission system for a cellular radiotelephone system provides protection against data loss caused by multipath fade and subscriber unit handoff. Data from data terminal equipment (801) to be transmitted is converted by a system data processor (805) and radio signalling interface (807) into a format compatible with radio transmission prior to transmission by a transceiver (809). The data is reconverted to its original format following reception. Handoff is accomplished by halting the data transmission prior to handoff and resuming data transmission after handoff. Call supervision occurs via busy-idle bit coding performed in radio signalling interface (807).

Abstract: A site controller (102) instructs a transcoder (121) to operate in a partial transcoding mode (401). While in the partial transcoding mode, the transcoder continuously monitors for a synchronization pattern. If the synchronisation pattern is detected within a predetermined period of time, the transcoder switches operation to a transparent mode (402). While in the transparent mode, the transcoder transparently passes compressed digital voice. If the synchronization pattern is not detected within the predetermined period of time, the transcoder switches operation to a full transcoding mode (400). Regardless of the operating mode, the transcoder continues to monitor for the synchronization pattern. Additionally, the transcoder transmits the synchronization pattern in either the partial transcoding mode or transparent mode. By detecting the synchronization pattern generated by the transcoder, other transcoders (122-123) can also switch to the transparent mode, thereby avoiding multiple format conversions.

Abstract: Data to be transmitted from an information source (301), associated with a local/wide area network (303), to a target destination (317) is formatted into a plurality of data packets. Based on a message type of the data packets, either a circuit-switched network (311) or a packet-switched network (309) is selected. When the circuit-switched network is chosen, a circuit-switched channel (314) is established to the target destination, and the data packets are transmitted to the target destination via the circuit-switched channel. When the packet-switched network is chosen, a packet-switched channel (313) is established to the target destination, and the data packets are transmitted to the target destination via the packet-switched channel.
