Abstract: The first object of the present invention is to provide a PDP with improved panel brightness which is achieved by improving the efficiency in conversion from discharge energy to visible rays. The second object of the present invention is to provide a PDP with improved panel life which is achieved by improving the protecting layer protecting the dielectrics glass layer. To achieve the first object, the present invention sets the amount of xenon in the discharge gas to the range of 10% by volume to less than 100% by volume, and sets the charging pressure for the discharge gas to the range of 500 to 760Torr which is higher than conventional charging pressures. With such construction, the panel brightness increases. Also, to achieve the second object, the present invention has, on the surface of the dielectrics glass layer, a protecting layer consisting of an alkaline earth oxide with (100)-face or (110)-face orientation. The protecting layer, which may be formed by using thermal Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) method, plasma enhanced CVD method, or a vapor deposition method with irradiation of ion or electron beam, will have a high sputtering resistance and effectively protect the dielectrics glass layer. Such a protecting layer contributes to the improvement of the panel life.

Abstract: A flat display comprising a first electrode (2) formed on a first substrate (1), an insulating layer (3) so deposited on the first substrate (1) as to cover the first electrode (2), a second electrode (4) deposited on the insulating layer (3) perpendicularly to the first electrode (2) to form a matrix electrode, insular electrodes (6) deposited near the second electrode and connected to the first electrode (2) through individual conductors (26) extending through the insulating layer (3), and a dielectric layer (7) so deposited on the insulating layer as to cover the second electrode (4) and t he insular electrodes (6), whereby electrical discharge with the insular electrodes (6) is selectively caused. The flat display has a simple structur e and is easily produced. The electrical discharge is stable, crosstalk hardly occurs, and the resolution is high.

Abstract: The display panel has two substrates (21,28) with electrodes (11,12) placed parallel to each other on one of the substrates. A discharge gas fills the space between the substrates. A control circuit (102-105) applies controlled potentials to the electrodes. A screen (40-43) blocks part of the light emitted by the display lines at edges of the display. Each display line is formed between two adjacent electrodes, with the control signals applied so that a discharge is generated between the electrodes to generate a display line.

Abstract: A discharge tube for a display device includes a pair of memory elements (Ma, Mb) having memory electrodes (3a, 3b) formed of conductive layers with a plurality of apertures (5a, 5b) arranged in an XY matrix form, and in which the entire surfaces of the memory electrodes (3a, 3b) are covered with insulating layers (4a, 4b) and laminated such that corresponding apertures (5a, 5b) covered with the insulating layers (4a, 4b) communicate with each other thereby forming discharge cells, all of which are sealed into a tube body (1, 6) in which a discharging gas is enclosed. An AC voltage (10) necessary for maintaining a discharge is applied between the memory electrodes (3a, 3b) of the pair of memory elements (Ma, Mb).

Abstract: The display has first and second plates (1,2) facing each other at a predetermined separation. One of the plates is transparent. A discharge space (11) defined by these two plates is filled with a discharge gas. The discharge space is divided into multiple pixels. Multiple pairs of scanning electrodes (3) and common electrodes (4) are formed in rows on an internal surface of the first plate, and provide emission maintenance surfaces. Multiple data electrodes (10) are formed on the internal surface of the second plate in columns to permit a discharge opposed to the writing emission. A pixel is formed by the intersection of the rows and columns.

Abstract: A display comprises a matrix of fluorescent or discharge lamps each lamp forming a picture element 18. The display is driven by row and column drivers 19, 20. The drivers supply to the electrodes of the lamps write voltages- which initiate discharge- and sustain voltages. The peak value of the write pulse is made equal to the peak value of the sustain pulse. The display may include fluorescent lamps comprising a dielectric cylinder that has different diameters in an axial direction. The lamps may have a third electrode to which is supplied a sustain voltage immediately before the write pulse is applied to the lamp.

Abstract: A plasma display panel (PDP) is disclosed which includes a plurality of anodes formed on an upper plate, a plurality of first sustaining electrodes and a plurality of alternating second sustaining electrodes and cathodes formed on a lower plate, and a dielectric coated on the first and second sustaining electrodes and cathodes. A method for driving the PDP includes the steps of initiating a discharge by supplying a potential higher than the discharge firing voltage to the anodes and cathodes, generating a predetermined potential between the cathodes and first sustaining electrodes to increase the voltage generated from the discharge-initiating step, supplying a voltage higher than a discharge sustaining voltage between the first and second sustaining electrodes to maintain the discharge, and supplying a narrow pulse to the cathodes for erasing the discharge.

Abstract: The plasma display panel has front and rear plates (1a, 2a) separated to form a space filled with gas. A number of strip formed display electrodes (30a) are formed on one plate and scanning electrodes (10a) and common electrodes (30a) alternate on the lower plate. This has a dielectric layer (13a) under the electrodes and a further dielectric layer (14a) above. Connections (11a) are formed at the ends of the scanning electrodes. The second connection (12a) is formed as a strip. The extension of the dielectric material (131a) between the contacts provides a capacitor function. ADVANTAGE - Improved construction of hybrid AC-DC memory type screen.
