Abstract: An AC plasma display panel includes first and second plates, a discharge space, a plurality of pairs of scan electrodes and common electrodes, and a plurality of data electrodes. The first and second plates are arranged opposite to each other through a predetermined gap, at least one of which is transparent. The discharge space is partitioned into a plurality of pixels. The pairs of scan electrodes and common electrodes are formed on the inner surface of the first plate in the row direction to allow emission sustaining surface discharge therebetween. Abstract: A PDP driving method, in which a stable writing discharge can be realized by using a scanning pulse whose width is narrow without changing a structure of the panel and an image having high light emitting luminance can be realized in the large number of scanning lines, is provided. When a scanning pulse is applied to scanning electrodes, a writing discharge is generated at all of display cells. Electric charge particles generated by the writing discharge at the display cells are supplied to display cells on the next scanning line by diffusion. The writing discharge is stably generated in high speed at the next scanning line when a scanning pulse is applied to the next scanning line by receiving the electric charge particles, consequently, the width of the scanning pulse can be made to be narrow. In order that the writing discharge is generated at display cells, which do not shift to a sustaining discharge, a sub scanning pulse being negative polarity is applied to common electrodes.

Abstract: The display has first and second plates (1,2) facing each other at a predetermined separation. One of the plates is transparent. A discharge space (11) defined by these two plates is filled with a discharge gas. The discharge space is divided into multiple pixels. Multiple pairs of scanning electrodes (3) and common electrodes (4) are formed in rows on an internal surface of the first plate, and provide emission maintenance surfaces. Multiple data electrodes (10) are formed on the internal surface of the second plate in columns to permit a discharge opposed to the writing emission. A pixel is formed by the intersection of the rows and columns.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve light-emitting efficiency and to reduce power consumption by applying a voltage, whose waveform has the shape of a high voltage which is sufficient to generate a sustaining discharge after having the shape of a low voltage preceded, for a long time. SOLUTION: When a plasma display panel(PDP) is driven, a pulse-shaped voltage shown in (a) is applied on a common electrode and a scanning electrode. The pulse shape (a) is formed by applying a low voltage V1 for a long time t1 , e.g., t1 =3 microsec., V1 =100 V, thereafter applying a high voltage V2 for a long time t2 , e.g., t2 =3 microsec., and V2 =150 V. The feature of this pulse shape is set so that the actual discharge is generated at the time of applying the succeeding voltage and the discharge is not generated at the time of applying the preceeding voltage. A pulse (b) having such a shape is applied on the common electrode 13 and the scanning electrode 12, respectively and is used for a sustaining discharge pulse.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly drive an AC plasma display panel even when the surface discharge interval is expanded and improve luminous efficiency by setting the ratio of the gap size between two substrates against the gap size between a scanning electrode and a common electrode to a specific value. SOLUTION: The ratio between the surface discharge interval (d) and the opposite discharge interval (h) is specified, and this AC plasma display panel can be properly driven even when the surface discharge interval (d) is expanded. When the surface discharge interval (d) is increased, the opposite discharge interval (h) is increased in response to the increment of the surface discharge interval (d), and the value of h/d is set to the range of 0.8-1.25. The maintenance margin is increased, the data voltage is reduced, and the power consumption can be reduced. A wide-gap panel having high luminous efficiency is easily utilized.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the emission luminance, reduce the power consumption, and improve the display quality by setting an inter-electrode pulse shape generating one maintenance discharge into a shape combining a short-period high potential difference and a long-period low potential difference. SOLUTION: An inter-electrode pulse shape generating one maintenance discharge is formed by combining a short-period high potential difference and a long-period low potential difference. After a short-period high voltage, e.g. t1 =200 ns, V1 =200 V, is applied, a long-period low voltage, e.g. t2 =4 μs, V2 =130 V, is applied to form the pulse shape. The first point of the pulse shape is that the applying time t1 of the preceding high voltage is shorter than the period until the discharge current wave-form becomes a peak after a pulse is applied. The second point is that the long-period low voltage of the applying time t2 and voltage V2 can maintain an electric discharge with no high voltage applied. The pulse of this shape is utilized for a discharge maintaining pulse.
