A method for suppressing plant damage by nematodes which comprises the concurrent administration, to the locus, soil or seeds of plants in need of such treatment, of (a) a metabolite of the fungus Myrothecium verrucaria and (b) a chemical pesticide, as well as synergistic nematocidal compositions useful therein.
Abstract:
A method is provided for inhibiting rotavirus infection of human cells by treating the rotavirus with a sulfated polysaccharide. Sulfated polysaccharides include carrageenan and dextran sulfate. The most effective agent in inhibiting cellular rotavirus infection is lambda-carrageenan, which may be formulated in a liquid and ingested enterally. A composition containing lambda-carrageenan is an aspect of the invention.
Abstract:
A method and kit for measurement of a steroid by means of a competitive immunoassay, preferably a competitive enzyme immunoassay. The method and kit involve the use of a steroid analogue conjugated to a label. The steroids that are amenable to detection by the method and kit of the present invention include estradiol and progesterone. The method comprises the steps of: a) incubating a mixture of a test sample suspected of containing a given steroid, a solid phase coupled to an antibody specific for that steroid, and a conjugate of an analogue of that steroid to form steroid/antibody complexes and conjugate/antibody complexes on said solid phase; b) separating said solid phase from said mixture; c) measuring the amount of label present in said mixture or in said solid phase; and d) determining the amount of steroid in said sample from the amount of label. The kit comprises a solid phase coupled to an antibody specific for a steroid and a conjugate of an analogue of that steroid.
Abstract:
The present invention is an improved stylet for enteric or nasoenteric feeding tubes. In broadest terms, the present invention comprises: a stylet for a feeding tube, the stylet having: (a) a stylet hub having a bore therethrough and adapted to be attached to one end of the feeding tube, the bore having an inner surface; (b) a longitudinally extending reinforcement member adapted to extend through the feeding tube, the reinforcement member having a proximal end; and (c) a hollow member having an outer surface and having an aperture, the hollow member disposed in the bore so as to hold the inlet end of the reinforcement member between the outer surface and the inner surface through an interference fit.
Abstract:
A method is disclosed for modifying a liquid enteral nutritional product during delivery thereof from a supply container to a feeding tube delivering the nutritional product to the gastrointestinal tract of a patient. During enteral tube feeding the nutritional product passes through a formulation chamber, e.g., a drip chamber, having located therein at least one controlled release dosage form unit containing at least one beneficial agent. The beneficial agent may be selected from nutrients, medicaments, probiotics, or diagnostic agents or mixtures thereof, and any such together with a physiologically acceptable marker dye in controlled release dosage form and/or the same or different additional beneficial agent not in controlled release dosage form. Controlled release dosage forms may be of a conventional sustained release type or an osmotically driven delivery device.
Abstract:
A method for dye-marking a liquid enteral nutritional product during delivery thereof from a supply container to a feeding tube delivering the nutritional product to the gastrointestinal tract of a patient includes the steps of: (1) providing apparatus such as a formulation chamber, e.g., a drip chamber, connectable to the supply container, with at least one sustained release reservoir containing a physiologically acceptable and dispersible marker dye positioned within the formulation chamber, and, liquid communication means connecting the formulation chamber to the feeding tube of a patient; (2) providing a supply container containing the nutritional product; (3) connecting the formulation chamber to the supply container and the liquid communication means to the feeding tube; and (4) flowing the dye-marked nutritional product through the apparatus and into the feeding tube. The sustained release reservoir may be a conventional slow release coated tablet, microspheres, or capsule type or an osmotically driven device. The marker dye may be a colorant dye or a fluorescing dye or a mixture thereof. If quick coloration is desired, the sustained release reservoir may be coated with a soluble layer of the marker dye or marker dye not in a sustained release reservoir may be placed in the formulation chamber along with a sustained release reservoir containing dye.
Abstract:
The catheter insertion device of the present invention includes a catheter dispenser having a catheter outlet extending from a base and a drum receptacle engaged to the base in a rotating relationship. An inlet opening in the base is coaxially aligned with the catheter outlet. A passageway extends from the inlet opening tangentially through the catheter drum to the catheter outlet. A rigid needle is disposed through the passageway so that the sharp tip extends beyond the catheter outlet. A flexible introducer catheter generally contiguously and telescopically surrounds the distal portion of the needle. The introducer catheter extends beyond the catheter outlet to a position on the needle that is proximate to the sharp tip and is operatively associated with the needle for insertion into the vein of a patient. A one way flow valve is in fluid-tight connection with the proximal end of the flexible introducer catheter. The valve forms a portion of the passageway so that when the needle is slidably removed from the passageway the valve minimizes the fluid backflow from the vein. When the catheter drum is rotated relative to the base, the drum catheter is threadably inserted into and through the one way valve, through the indwelling flexible introducer catheter and into the vein of the patient.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a pesticidal composition comprising a Bacillus thuringiensis biopesticide in an ineffective amount for controlling a pest and a surfactant in an effective amount for potentiating the pesticidal activity of the Bacillus thuringiensis biopesticide for controlling the pest or for reducing the amount of the Bacillus thuringiensis biopesticide typically needed to be a commercially effective biopesticide. The present invention further relates to a method for controlling a pest comprising exposing the pest to said pesticidal composition of the present invention.
Abstract:
Embodiments disclosed herein provide apparatuses and methods for verifying dispense of a fluid from a dispense nozzle. According to one method, a path of electromagnetic radiation from a source to a receiver is obstructed with the fluid dispensed from the dispense nozzle. The intensity of the electromagnetic radiation received by the receiver is measured. The measured intensity is compared with a predetermined intensity to verify the dispense of fluid from the dispense nozzle. One apparatus for verifying dispense of a fluid comprises a source of electromagnetic radiation, and a receiver of the electromagnetic radiation from the source of the electromagnetic radiation operatively associated with the source of the electromagnetic radiation such that the electromagnetic radiation from the source is received by the receiver. A path followed by the electromagnetic radiation from the source to the receiver is offset from the fluid exiting end of the dispense nozzle by a predetermined distance such that dispense of fluid and a major drop of fluid depending from the fluid exiting end of the dispense nozzle obstruct the path and such that a minor drop of fluid does not obstruct the path.
