[Also in Division H1] A binder for securing ferromagnetic particles to a substrate (see Division H1) comprises a mixture of (I) 60 to 99% by weight of a copolyamide of (a) 20 to 60% by weight of at least one lactam having more than six ring members and (b) 80 to 40% by weight of a mixture of at least one dicarboxylic acid having 6 to 20 carbon atoms, the latter mixture having at least one aliphatic dicarboxylic acid or diamine of 6 to 20 carbon atoms and represented by the formula in which Z denotes -CH 2 NH 2 or -COOH, R is an alkyl radical having at least 2 carbon atoms, R 2 is hydrogen or an alkyl radical having at least 2 carbon atoms and x and y each denote an integer from 1 to 5, and/or p,p 1 - diamino dicyclohexyl methane, the copolyamide being soluble in an organic solvent, and ((II) 40 to 1% by weight of a reaction product of formaldehyde and an aromatic compound having a phenolic hydroxy group and suitable for the formation of a phenolic resin. Numerous suitable lactams or corresponding amino acids are mentioned. Lists are given of compounds of the above general formula and of other C 6-20 dicarboxylic acids and diamines which may contain aliphatic or aromatic ring systems. The phenoplasts may be derived from phenol, cresols or naphthols and may be modified by conventional additives; in examples, the phenoplast comprises a polyester of 1 mole of trimethylol propane and 0.8 mole of adipic acid as modifier. Various solvents and optional additives are mentioned.

[Also in Division C3] Printing reliefs are prepared by exposing a plate, film or sheet of a photo-polymerizable composition to the action of actinic light, through a negative or positive image-bearing transparency, and removing in the desired depth the non-polymerized (non exposed) areas by means of a suitable solvent, said photo-polymerizable composition comprising a mixture of 50 - 90% by weight of a soluble linear synthetic polyamide containing as an integral part of the polymer chain recurring amido groups and 10 - 50% by weight of at least one addition polymerizable monomer containing at least two non-conjugated ethylenic double bonds or a mixture of such monomer with a monomer containing only one ethylenic double bond (said monomer or monomers being compatible to the extent of at least 30% by weight of the polyamidemonomer mixture with said polyamide), and 0À05 - 8% by weight of the polyamide/monomer mixture of at least one compatible carboxylic anhydride dispersed in the polyamide - monomer mixture. The compositions may also contain 0À01 - 10% by weight of the polyamide/monomer mixture of a photo-polymerisation initiator. The plate, film or sheet may be attached to a support, e.g. of metal, wood, paper or plastics material. The polyamide is preferably a copolymer of a lactam and/or nylon salt. Suitable poly-unsaturated monomers include alkylene - bis (meth) acrylamides, poly (meth) acrylyl derivatives of polyamines, (meth) acrylate esters of polyhydric alcohols, urethane and urea compounds obtained by reacting a diol mono (meth) acrylate or a mono - (meth) acrylamide with a diisocyanate, and heterocyclic compounds such as 1, 35 - triacryloyl - hexahydrotriazine- 1, 3, 5 and triallyl cyanurate. Suitable monoethylenic monomers include amides of (meth) acrylic, maleic and itaconic acid, styrene, mono- (meth) acrylate esters, N-vinyl-carbazole, N-vinyl pyrrolidone, N-vinyl-imides, vinyl acetate or propionate, dimethyl maleate and N - vinyl caprolactam. The anhydride component may be an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic anhydride; polymeric anhydrides may also be used. Initiators which may be used include vicinal dicarbonyl compounds, α-carbonylalcohols, acyloin ethers, azonitriles, and polynuclear quinones. A thermal polymerization inhibitor, e.g. hydroquinone, p-methoxyphenol or di-t-butyl-p-cresol, may also be present. The photo-polymerization process is suitable for relief printing, indirect relief printing, dry offset printing and autotype intaglio printing.

[Also in Division C7] The following compositions are exemplified for coating on metal surfaces by electrodeposition: (A) an aqueous composition containing xylene, butanol, a melamine-formaldehyde condensate etherified with butanol, and a copolymer of 2-ethyl-hexyl acrylate, N,N-dimethyl-N-(#-hydroxyethyl)- amine salt of acrylic acid, N-butoxymethyl-methacrylamide, 4- hydroxybutyl acrylate and styrene. (B) an aqueous composition containing xylene, a copolymer of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, N,N-dimethyl-N-(#-hydroxyethyl)-amine salt of acrylic acid, 4-hydroxybutyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate and styrene, and a copolymer of N - butoxymethyl - methacrylamide, acrylic acid, 4-hydroxybutyl acrylate, styrene and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate. Coatings obtained from the compositions are stoved by heating at 130-150‹ C.

[Also in Divisions B2 and D2] Compositions useful in coating, bonding and impregnating applications, e.g. in binding wood chips to form chipboard, comprise (1) water, optionally containing a minor amount of a water-soluble solvent, (2) a water-insoluble binder containing N-methylolamide and/or N-methylolimide groups etherified with an alkanol, optionally dissolved in a waterinsoluble organic solvent, and (3) as protective colloid, a water-soluble ammonia and/or amine salt of a copolymer of (a) 15-70% by weight of an acrylate and/or methacrylate ester of a C 7 -C 20 monohydric alcohol, (b) 5-40% by weight of an ether of N-methylol-acrylamide and/or -methacrylamide with a C 1 -C 10 monohydric alcohol, (c) 3-15% by weight of a C 3 -C 6 α,#-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and (d) 0-50% by weight of at least one further ethylenically unsaturated comonomer. Component (2) may be a methylol ether derivative of a polycondensate, addition polymer or addition polymer condensate, e.g. etherified melamine-formaldehyde products, and copolymers of etherified N-methylol-(meth)acrylamide with alkyl (meth)acrylates and/or styrene, wherein the etherified methylol groups are formed before or after polymerization. With regard to the protective colloid, the alcohol radicals of components (a) and (b) are preferably derived from alkanols; component (c) may be acrylic, methacrylic, maleic or fumaric acid; and component (d) may be a mono- (meth)acrylate ester of an alkanediol, styrene, a C 1 -C 6 -alkyl (meth)acrylate or a vinyl carboxylate ester. The compositions may include additional components such as phenoplast, alkyd or epoxide resins, pigments and curing catalysts, e.g. ammonium nitrate. Coatings obtained from the compositions can be stoved to water- and solvent-resistant form.

Abstract: A ball-point pen ink comprises a solution in a high boiling point organic solvent of a coloured copolymer which has been prepared from: (a) an aromatic monoethylenically unsaturated compound and/or (b) an ester of a monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and (c) a dye bearing an ethylenically unsaturated group, by copolymerization of (a) and/or (b) and (c) component (c) may be replaced by: (c) a monoethylenically unsaturated monomer bearing a reactive group and the copolymer obtained is reacted with: (f) a dye bearing a reactive group complementary to the reactive group borne by component (e). In another modification, component (c) is replaced by: (g) a monoethylinecally unsaturated diazotizable monomer and the copolymer obtained is diazotized and then reacted with (h) a coupling component, to form a polymer dye. The coloured copolymer may contain units of (d) one or more further monomers. The high boiling points solvent has a boiling point of not less than 125 DEG C., those specified being 1,2-propylene carbonate, dicyclohexyl carbonate, diphenyl carbonate, adipate and phthalic esters such as diethyl or di-n-butyl phthalate, methyl glycol, ethyl glycol and benzyl alcohol. Monomer (a) is e.g. styrene or a substituted styrene, for instance p-methyl, p-chloro, o-chloro or p-hydroxystyrene. Specified monomers (b) include ethyl, n-butyl, cyclohexyl, 2-ethylhexyl and stearylacrylates, and methylmethacrylate. Suitable dyes (c) are azo, anthraquinone or triphenylmethane dyes containing a vinyl, acrylyl, acrylylamino, acryloyloxyalkyl or acrylyloxyaryl group. Component (e) may be acrylamide, methacrylamide or a derivative thereof and component (g) may be p-aminostyrene. In the examples, ethyl acrylate or methyl methacrylate are copolymerized with a dye of formula in solution in n-butyl acetate using azodiisobutyrodinitril as catalyst. Benzyl alcohol is added to the resulting solution, from which the butyl acetate is then removed by distillation, to yield a red ink. When methyl methacrylate is similarly copolymerized with a dye of formula an orange-red ink is obtained, with a dye of formula a yellow ink is obtained and with a dye of formula a violet ink is obtained.

Abstract: Stable compositions suitable for finishing textiles comprise a mixture of polyacrylamide and an aqueous dispersion of a water-repelling agent based on a zirconium salt, an aluminium salt and/or a solid paraffin, the polyacrylamide having been prepared by polymerizing acrylamide, optionally together with not more than 1% by weight (based on the polymer) of a comonomer such as a carboxylic monomer, in the presence of a free radical catalyst and a mercaptan having an O-containing group adjacent to the -SH group. Salts specified are zirconium acetate and aluminium oxychloride. The compositions may also contain additives such as white oil, bone glue, buffers, acetic acid, and condensation products of formaldehyde with ureas, melamine, dicyanodiamide and etherified derivatives thereof. The polyacrylamide is preferably prepared in aqueous solution at a pH of from 3.5 to 6 using a catalyst such as hydrogen peroxide, acetyl peroxide or azodiisobutyronitrile, or less preferably a persulphate or perborate, and an oxygen-containing mercaptan such as 2-mercapto-ethanol, 1 - thio - glycerine or thioglycollic acid. The reaction mixture may also include a small amount of K2FeCl4. Textiles treated with the compositions are finished by heating the impregnation, optionally in the presence of a curing catalyst such as ammonium chloride.ALSO:Textiles are finished by impregnating with a composition comprising polyacrylamide and an aqueous dispersion of a water-repelling agent based on a zirconium salt (e.g. the acetate), an aluminium salt (e.g. the oxychloride and/or a solid paraffin, the polyacrylamide having been prepared by polymerising the monomer in the presence of a free radical catalyst and a mercaptan having an O-containing group adjacent to the -SH group. The compositions may optionally include additives such as white oil, bone glue, buffers, acetic acid, ammonium chloride (curing catalyst) and aminoplast condensation products. The impregnated textiles are dried and heated to obtain water-repellent and, optionally, crease-proof, swelling-proof and shrink-resistant finishes. The compositions can be applied to woollen, cotton and synthetic-fibre fabrics.
