    Abstract: In a process for the anionic polymerization of lactams having 5 to 14 ring members, the polymerization activator used is a compound of the general formula where n is 1 or 2, R1 and R2 are each monovalen hydrocarbon radicals having one to seven carbon atoms or R1 and R2 joined together form a divalent radical, R3 is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical having one to eight carbon atoms and R, when n is 1 is an alkyl amine, arylamino or aralkylamino radical having one to fourteen carbon atoms, and, when n is 2 is a divalent radical having the formula -NH-R3-NH- where R4 is a divalent hydrocarbon radical having two to fifteen carbon atoms. Specified lactams are pyrrolidone, piperidone, e -caprolactam, capryllactam, oenanthiclactam, capriclactam, laurolactam, e -ethyl-e -caprolactam, #x-ethyl-#x-oenantholactam and methylenebis-caprolactam. Fillers, e.g. glass fibres, asbestos, graphite, gypsum, chalk, molybdenum sulphide, wood flour and fibres may be incorporated into the polymerization mixture. In Examples (1) to (6), e -caprolactam is polymerized in the presence of sodium caprolactam and: (1) benzimidazole-1-carboxylic anilide; (2) imidazole-1-carboxylic acid N : N1-diphenyl amide; (3) benzimidazole-1-carboxylic acid (N1-methyl) anilide; (4) 2-methylimidazoline-N(1)-carboxylic acid N : N1-diphenyl amide; (5) N : N - hexamethylene - bis - (carbamyldimethyl formamidine) and (6) (a) hexamethylene - bis - (N1 - carbamyl - 2 - methylimidazoli (b) hexamethylene-bis-(N-carbamyltriphenyl formamidine). In Example (7) pyrrolidone is polymerized in the presence of sodium methylate and imidazole-1-carboxylic diphenylamide.

    Abstract: The invention comprises compounds of general formula: in which R1 denotes an alkyl, substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, amino, substituted amino, carbamyl, substituted carbamyl or heterocyclic radical, R2 denotes a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, substituted alkyl or aryl radical, or in which R1 and R2 together with the amide nitrogen atom may form a heterocyclic ring, and in which X1, X2, X3 are each halogen atoms; and their preparation by introducing the radical -CO-NR1R2 into a pentaerythritol trihalohydrin of general formula: to replace the hydroxyl hydrogen thereof by reacting said pentaerythritol trihalohydrin with a carbamic acid halide of general formula: Hal-CO-NR1R2, or with phosgene and then with an amine of general formula HNR1R2, or (when R2=H) with an isocyanate of general formula OCN-R1. Other processes described are reaction of a pentaerythritol trihalohydrin with (1) a urethane R3O.OC-NR1R2, or (2) a haloformic acid ester Ha1-CO.OR3 and then with an amine HNR1R2, or (3) with phosgene and an alcohol R3OH to form a mixed carbonic acid ester and then with an amine HNR1R2. Chloroformic acid-(2, 2, 2-trischloromethyl)-ethyl ester is prepared by reaction of phosgene with the corresponding hydrin. Pharmacological formulations containing compounds of the invention are mentioned for oral, parenteral and rectal administration. The compounds have sedative and hypnotic properties.     Abstract: Symmetrical N,N1-disubstituted formamidines of formula R-NH-CH=N-R, in which R represents alkyl radicals, aralkyl radicals, or alkyl and aralkyl radicals substituted with dialkylamino groups containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms in the alkyl radical, alkoxy groups containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, nitrile or hydroxy groups, are prepared by mixing an amine of formula R-NH2 with hydrogen cyanide in a molar ratio of at least 2: 1 at a temperature of from 50 DEG to 135 DEG C. until no more ammonia is liberated, and then distilling the reaction mixture. The process may be carried out in an inert solvent.
