Abstract: Flocked material is produced by a process wherein a highly-viscous or thixotropic solution or dispersion, which may contain 10 to 30% by wt. of a readily volatile organic solvent, of a cross-linkable film-forming macromolecular organic substance is flocked with fibres of all types, e.g. cotton, wool, viscose, acetate, triacetate, polyamide, and polyester fibres having any desired shape and colour, and non fibrous materials, e.g. mica and metal powders, by a conventional method, on a non-adherent substrate, and is dried and subjected either before or after stripping from the substrate, to a cross-linking reaction. The macromolecular organic substance may be a polymer which may be a cross-linkable emulsion polymer, i.e. polycondensation and polyaddition products which after formation of a film can be converted into the thermosetting condition by cross-linking, e.g. unsaturated polyesters, polyurethanes, epoxy resins, and polymers having reactive groups which cause cross-linking, emulsion copolymers of comonomers having reactive groups such as those having free or etherified N-methylolamide, chlorohydrin, epoxy or quaternised dialkylamino methylene amide groups, examples of which are given, or other comonomers which do not contain any groups regarded as reactive in this connection, e.g. butadiene, vinyl esters such as vinyl acetate, styrene, vinyl chloride, acrylic esters, methacrylic esters, fumaric esters, acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile, acrylic acid, acrylamide and N-vinylpyrrolidone. The emulsion polymers may themselves be cross-linkable, e.g. contain N-methylol groups, or compounds which cause cross-linking, e.g. dimethylolurea, aminoplast recondensates or diisocyanates, may be added thereto. Fillers, thickeners, e.g. cellulose derivatives, polyacrylic acid, and polyvinyl alcohol, dyes, brighteners, pigments, protective colloids, plasticizers, hardeners and cross-linking catalysts may also be present. The solution or dispersion may be applied to the non-adherent substrate by spreading, knife coating or spraying; and is then flocked by scattering or electrostatic means, and any desired pattern being produced by the use of stencils or by applying flock of different types in different patterns. The non-adherent substrate may be a film or sheet of polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polyester, metal, glass or oiled paper. The organic film may be provided with a self-adhesive layer on the back.

Abstract: Articles of aromatic polyesters, cellulose acetate or cellulose triacetate are printed with a paste containing a dispersed dye and 1-10% based on the weight of finished printing paste of a water-soluble polyvinyl ether. Advantageously polyvinyl methyl ether is used having a K-value of 40-50 although polyvinyl ethers containing low molecular weight hydroxyalkyl radicals may also be used. Copolymer ethers containing small amounts of other monomers especially those which improve water-solubility such as maleic anhydride as well as mixtures of any of the above may be employed. Other usual additives may be present, those specified being British gum, tragacanth, crystal gum, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, the sodium salt of a dialkylsulphonimide with about 10 carbon atoms in each alkyl radical, sodium chloride, sodium sulphate, salts of ligninsulphonic acid and naphthalene sulphonic acid/formaldehyde condensation products. Printing may be followed by drying with hot air and fixation with hot air or steam at about 190 DEG C. Examples are given employing disperse dyestuffs from the monoazo and anthraquinone series.

Abstract: Print pastes for textiles and other substrates comprise an oil-in-water emulsion containing a pigment or vat dye and, as a binder, a cross-linkable water-soluble copolymer of:-(1) 5 to 60 parts by weight of an N-methylol alkyl ether of acrylamide or methacrylamide wherein the alkyl moiety of the ether group has 8 to 18 carbon atoms; (2) 3 to 20 parts by weight of a polymerizable a ,b - ethylenically unsaturated mono- or di-carboxylic acid; and (3) 20 to 75 parts by weight of at least one other ethylenically unsaturated monomer; at least 50% of the free carboxylic groups of the copolymer being neutralized by ammonia or a nitrogenous organic base (e.g. methylamine, triethylamine, dimethylethanolamine, triethanolamine, piperidine or morpholine). Examples of monomer (1) are N - (2 - ethylhexoxymethyl) - acrylamide and N - (2 - octylhexoxymethyl) - methacrylamide. Suitable monomers (2) include crotonic, citraconic, itaconic, mesaconic, maleic, fumaric and, preferably, acrylic and methacrylic acids. Monomers (3) include styrene, esters of unsaturated carboxylic acids, vinyl esters (including versatic esters), N-substituted unsaturated amides, dienes, vinyl and vinylidene chloride, vinyl ethyl ketone, vinyl ethyl ether, acrylo-methacrylo-nitriles, acrylamide and methacrylamide, N-vinyl pyrrolidone, N-vinyl caprolactam, monoesters of polyhydric alcohols and unsaturated carboxylic acids, monovinyl ethers of polyhydric alcohols, allyl alcohol and bicycloheptene compounds containing hydroxy groups. White spirit or mineral spirit gasoline fractions may be used as the oil phase of the emulsion. Pigments exemplified are red iron oxide and copper phthalocyanine. The print pastes may optionally include cross-linking or curing agents, e.g. urea-formaldehyde precondensates, melamine-formaldehyde precondensates or ammonium thiocyanate.ALSO:Print pastes for textiles, e.g. cotton, cloth, and other substrates comprise an oil-in-water emulsion containing a pigment or vat dye and, as a binder, a cross-linkable water-soluble copolymer of:- (1) 5 to 60 parts by weight of an N-methylol alkyl ether of acrylamide or methacrylamide wherein the alkyl moiety of the ether group has 8 to 18 carbon atoms; (2) 3 to 20 parts by weight of a polymerisable a ,b -ethylenically unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acid; and (3) 20 to 75 parts by weight of at least one other ethylenically unsaturated monomer; at least 50% of the free carboxylic groups of the copolymer being neutralised by ammonia or a nitrogenous organic base (e.g. methylamine, triethylamine, dimethyl ethanolamine, triethanolamine, piperidine or morpholine).
