PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an alcohol, by which the alcohol having an elongated carbon chain can efficiently be produced from a primary alcohol in the presence of a small amount of a catalyst. SOLUTION: The method for producing the alcohol is characterized by dimerizing the primary alcohol in the presence of a compound of an element in the groups 8 to 10 in the periodic table, a phosphine-based ligand and a base to obtain the alcohol having the elongated carbon chain. The primary alcohol includes ethanol, 1-propanol, and 1-butanol. The compound of the element in the groups 8 to 10 in the periodic table includes an iridium compound.
