Abstract:
In a process control system, having a controller for providing robust control of a process, the controller utilizes a predetermined range control procedure, the results being a control solution. The process has at least one manipulated variable and at least one controlled variable. A method of providing dynamic optimization comprises the steps of calculating an optimized set of steady state values of the manipulated variables and the controlled variables. An augmented range control procedure is created to harmonize the set of steady state values with the control solution. The augmented range control procedure is solved, the manipulated variables generated thereby being compatible with the set of steady state values and with the control solution. The process is controlled in accordance with the manipulated variables generated by the augmented range control procedure, thereby providing optimal control of the process.
Abstract:
An interferometric fiber optic gyroscope having a wavelength-sensitive splitter which has a splitting ratio that changes according to light wavelength. A feedback circuit indicates any difference that there might be in the intensities of counterpropagating beams in the sensing loop of the gyroscope, and provides a signal to the light source to change the light wavelength in a direction to cause the splitter ratio to change so as to equalize the beams' intensities for eliminating the Kerr effect.
Abstract:
An image display apparatus which employs a polarization-sensitive scattering element (PSSE). In the display, a light source is usesd to illuminate a panel which modulates light in order to form an image. Positioned between the light source and the panel is the PSSE which acts to effectively separate light of different polarizations. The PSSE provides a means for recapturing light energy which would otherwise be lost in the display, while reducing degradation and heat build-up due to light absorption.
Abstract:
A sensor assembly along with numerous processing equipment is provided for attachment to the work table of a precision machining system. By attaching the device to the work table and subsequently driving the work table through a repeated pattern of motions, the actual movement of the table can be precisely determined and, consequently, can be compensated for. The sensor assembly utilizes a plurality of gyroscopes and accelerometers to determine actual movement in inertial space.
Abstract:
A semiconductor pressure transducer comprises a silicon die having a topside and a bottom side. The silicon die further has a cavity in the bottom side thereby forming a diaphragm. Four piezoresistive elements are disposed on the topside of the silicon die on a periphery of the diaphragm and connected via metalized conductors disposed on the silicon die in the form of a Wheatstone bridge. A plurality of bonding pads disposed on the topside of the silicon die provides external access to the Wheatstone bridge circuit. A diagnostic conductor is disposed on the topside of the silicon die such that the periphery of the diaphragm is crossed, the diagnostic conductor being connected to corresponding bonding pads at each of the diagnostic conductor. Thus, when the diaphragm ruptures, the diagnostic conductor ruptures thereby providing a positive indication of the rupture of the diaphragm by external circuitry in which the diagnostic conductor is used.
Abstract:
A modulating optical element (10) having ports (1, 2) wherein either port can output or receive light signals. An electrooptic effect is applied to the optical element to allow the light signals to pass or not pass through the optical element. Due to the electrooptic effect in preventing signals from passing through the optic element ("off" state), light signals radiate out (50) of the optical element and are absorbed by the substrate (6) of the optical element assembly. Rather than being lost, the energy from the light signal is converted, via photodetector electrodes (7, 17), to current which may be used for other purposes in the modulator system, such as bias stabilization.

A differential satellite positioning system is configured to include a plurality of satellite positioning system receivers in close proximity of one another for determining independent pseudo range values which are processed in accordance with a selected averaging scheme for determining highly reliable satellite differential corrections.
Abstract:
A varactor diode having a stepped capacitance-voltage profile, formed in heterostructural integrated circuit technology. Several layers in the diode structure have pulse doping to confine conduction in the diode to a sheet of charge that provides the stepped capacitance-voltage profile. The structural design of the diode may be modified to attain desired capacitance-voltage characteristics.

Apparatus for mounting and making electrical connections to sensor devices (S1, S2, S3) for use in three axis sensing including a flexible circuit (20) and a substrate (30) shaped so that when a portion of the flexible tape (20) is secured to the substrate (30) the sensor devices (S1, S2, S3) can be mounted on the substrate (30) for sensing in the desired three directions. The sensors are connected to conductors in the flexible tape by wirebonds or by other means.
