    Abstract: Optical characteristic measuring systems and methods such as for determining the color or other optical characteristics of teeth are disclosed. Perimeter receiver fiber optics preferably are spaced apart from a source fiber optic and receive light from the surface of the object/tooth being measured. Light from the perimeter fiber optics pass to a variety of filters. The system utilizes the perimeter receiver fiber optics to determine information regarding the height and angle of the probe with respect to the object/tooth being measured. Under processor control, the optical characteristics measurement may be made at a predetermined height and angle. Various color spectral photometer arrangements are disclosed. Translucency, fluorescence, gloss and/or surface texture data also may be obtained. Audio feedback may be provided to guide operator use of the system. The probe may have a removable or shielded tip for contamination prevention. A method of producing dental prostheses based on measured data also is disclosed. Measured data also may be stored and/or organized as part of a patient data base. Such methods and implements may be desirably utilized for purposes of detecting and preventing counterfeiting or the like.

    Abstract: A field test-kit for analyzing arsenic concentration in water samples is provided. The kit includes a portable infrared beam photometer for measuring light absorbance in aqueous specimens. An infrared light emitting diode is configured to direct a beam of light through a specimen. A photodetector diode measures the intensity of light passing through the specimen. The photodetector output voltages relate to the light absorbed in the specimen and are displayed on a liquid crystal display screen. The kit is assembled using off-the-shelf electronic and opto-electronic components that have low power requirements. Dry cell batteries or solar cells power the kit. To test for arsenic, molybdenum based chemistries are used to selectively bind and convert arsenates and phosphates in the specimen into molybdenum-blue color complexes. The light absorbance of a specimen with both arsenates and phosphates bound in molybdenum-blue color complexes is compared to that of a reference specimen in which phosphates but not arsenates are bound and converted. The differential light absorbance of the two specimens is used to arrive at a quantitative value for the arsenic concentration in the water sample.

    Abstract: The disclosure relates to a method and apparatus for a compact birefringent interference imaging spectrometer. More specifically, the disclosure relates to a portable system for obtaining a spectrum of a sample. The portable system may include a first photon emission source for illuminating the sample with a first plurality of photons to thereby produce photons scattered by the sample; an optical lens for collecting the scattered photons; a filter for receiving the collected scattered photons and providing therefrom filtered photons; a first photon detector for receiving the filtered photons and obtaining therefrom a spectrum of the sample; and a rejection filter for blocking the photons from said first photon emission source from entering said first photon detector.     Abstract: A measuring device for emitted, remitted or transmitted light from a measuring object is provided having an optical detector for capturing light to be measured, said light being radiated from the measuring object; a spectrometer optically connected with the detector for dispersing the measuring light into its spectral components, said measuring light being captured by the detector, said spectrometer including a photo-electric converter for generating respective analog electrical signals from the spectral components of the measuring light; an analog/digital converter for converting the generated analog electrical signals into respective digital measurement data, said analog electrical signals being generated by the photo-electric converter; a digital computer for controlling the photo-electric converter and the analog/digital converter; a bidirectional interface for connecting the computer with an external computer; and a program for controlling the computer, said program for communicating between the computer and the external computer via the interface, wherein the external computer starts measuring processes and transfers the thus generated digital measurement data to the external computer via the interface. The interface is a USB or Fire Wire interface and the power supply to all electrical components of the measuring device is carried out through the interface. Therefore a power supply circuit is provided which is connected to the interface for generating the necessary supply voltage for each of the individual electrical components of the measuring device from the supply voltage being supplied by the external computer via the interface. The use of a USB or Fire Wire interface allows the processing of the measurement data to be transferred into the external computer, thus allowing a particularly cost efficient manufacturing of the device so that the device becomes available to a wide range of users.
