Abstract:
A method and system are provided for counting moving objects in a digital video stream. In contrast to known computationally-expensive methods, areas of motion are determined by threshold subtracting a current video frame from a short term average video scene. An object box surrounding an object is determined by threshold subtracting the current video frame from a long term average video scene. Coordinates of the moving object are identified by associating the area of motion with the object box, if it overlaps the area of motion, to define a moving object box. An event counter can be incremented when the moving object box is in a buffer zone in the current frame, and was in a detection zone in an earlier frame, and was initially detected in a buffer zone on the opposite side of the detection zone.
Abstract:
A polishing machine for optical elements, comprising: - a spindle arranged to rotationally drive an optical element; - a polishing tool mobile relative to the spindle; - a front face provided with a door enabling the access to the spindle and to the polishing tool; wherein the polishing tool is mounted on a body which is rotationally mounted on sliding means by way of a first axis, the sliding means being substantially perpendicular to the front face.
Abstract:
A stimulator (1) for stimulating a part of a human body is disclosed. The stimulator (1) comprises broadly an elongate member (2) in the form of a shaft of phallic form. The shaft has a head end (3) for penetrating an anatomical cavity and a base end (4). The stimulator (1) also includes means for generating a magnetic field in the form of one or more magnets (6, 7), and (8) mounted within the member (2). The magnets (6, 7) and (8) are strong permanent magnets and are longitudinally spaced apart from each other along the length of the member (2). The polar axis of each magnet (6, 7), and (8) is arranged such that it is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the member (2). That is one of the N or S poles faces towards the head end (3) and the other pole faces towards the base end (4). The stimulator (1) may also include drive means in the form of an electric motor (12) for driving the member in a reciprocating fashion.
Abstract:
The present invention relates generally to regulating biological developmental processes such as the biological functions involved in such developmental processes including growth and survival of an animal and particularly to methods of modifying the developmental processes and biological functions in cells. The invention also relates to methods of preventing and treating biological-development related conditions by regulating the developmental processes and modifying the biological functions in the cells.
Abstract:
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of promoting adhesion on the surface of a web of sheet material comprising subjecting the web to two surface treatment stages in series comprising: a first, heating, stage in which the surface of the sheet material is passed through a gas flame; followed immediately after the first stage by a second, discharge, stage in which the surface of the web following the heating stage is subjected to at least one electrical corona discharge. The first treatment stage being spaced from the second treatment stage by a distance comparable with the width of the sheet material. In a second aspect there is provided apparatus for undertaking the method of the first aspect; the first treatment stage is spaced from the second treatment stage along the path of the web by a distance comparable with the width of the web. In further aspects there are provided a web of material produced according to the method of the first aspect or by way of the apparatus of the second aspect.
Abstract:
An insert (1) for a moulded part is disclosed together with methods of manufacturing the insert and a component that includes the insert (1). The insert (1) is formed by providing a strip of material, forming a depression (4) on a first side of the strip in order to create a projection (5) on a second side opposite the first side and forming the strip into a sleeve (2) such that its ends (3) abut one another. The component is made by inserting the insert (1) into a pre-made component or by inserting the insert into a mould and moulding a component around a portion of the insert (1).
Abstract:
The present invention generally relates to neural stem cells, preferably foetal neural stem cells and their progeny thereof. The present invention provides methods of isolating, culturing and propagating neural stem cells preferably foetal neural stem cells and hte development of neural stem cell lines and lineages. The present invention also relates to the use of neural stem cells and somatic cells (eg rat fetal fibroblasts) and cells expressing the telomerase catalytic component (TERT) for gene targeting and gene knockup experiments and for producing genetically modified animals. In a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a cellular composiiton comprising one or more cells having a property characteristic of a neural stem cell and wherein said neural stem cell is capble of long term culture. Preferably the cells have a property characteristic of a foetal neural stem cell. In another aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of producing an animal, said method comprising introducing a continuously growing donor cells nucleus from a continuously growing donor cell into an oocyte or embryo and allowing the resulting embryo to mature and to preferably develop to a foetus or an adult animal.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a substantially homogeneous population of multipotential precursor cells which may be derived from foetal neural stem (FNS) cells, compositions containing FNS cells, adult neural stem (NS) cells, neural tissue, or any source which contains NS cells. These cells may be expanded long term in culture while maintaining their multipotential capacity to differentiate into neurons and glial cells. These cells display a high plasticity. These cells represent an important tool for many cell-based and gene-based therapies for neurological disorders. Accordingly, the invention provides a cellular composition comprising one or more cells having a property characteristic of a precursor or neural stem cell-like cell and wherein said cell is substantially nestin negative.
Abstract:
A method of extending the useable life of a gas turbine component fabricated from a cobalt-based alloy is disclosed. The method includes applying a rejuvenation process to the alloy where the alloy is placed in a protected atmosphere and heated to three different elevated temperatures and held at the elevated temperatures for approximately four hours each. Application of the rejuvenation process allows gas turbine components to be returned to service for at least one more service interval of approximately 24,000 operating hours.
