    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a direct smelting method for manufacturing molten metal from a supply material containing metal in a vessel for housing and containing the molten metal having a slag layer. SOLUTION: The interruption operation when there is a need for interrupting metal manufacture and the continuous supply of oxygen-containing gas and carbon-containing solid material is possible include a step of generating heat in a vessel by continuously pouring the oxygen-containing gas and carbon- containing solid material into the vessel and maintaining a molten metal temperature higher than a molten metal solidifying temperature. When there is a need for interrupting the metal manufacture and there is no carbon-containing solid material while there is the continuous supply of the oxygen-containing gas, the interruption operation includes a step of stopping the supply of the metal- containing supply material, pouring the oxygen-containing gas and gas or liquid combustible material into the vessel to generate the heat in the vessel and maintaining the molten metal temperature.

In this case, the exhaust gas duct 9 is provided with the first section 31 which inclines upward at an angle α of about, for example, 7 deg. to the horizontal from an inlet end 63, and the second section 33 with a steep gradient which extends vertically from the other end of the first section 31. As a result, this container minimizes the loss of the molten matter and the solid matter which are discharged together with the exhaust gas.

SOLUTION: In a method of relining a vessel that is used to carry out a direct smelting process that produces molten metal under conditions requiring molten bath temperature of at least 1000 deg.C, the vessel is of the type that has a floor that is refractory lined, a side wall that is at least partially refractory lined, a top wall, and at least two access openings to the interior of the vessel. The relining method includes the steps of cooling down the vessel after stopping direct smelting work, gaining access to the interior of the vessel via the access openings, relining the vessel, and restarting operation of the process in a period of time of 21 or less days. The vessel is of the type that has floors 45, 47, 49 that are refractory lined, a side wall 5 that is at least partially refractory lined, a top wall 7, and at least two access openings to the interior of the vessel. The relining method includes the works of cooling down the vessel in a period of time of 21 or less days, gaining access to the interior of the vessel via the access openings, relining the vessel, and restarting operation of the process.
