Abstract: PURPOSE: A portable terminal having a power-saving function and a method for controlling the same are provided to suppress power consumption other than an element necessary for communication in case that a communication module installed at a portable terminal executes communication. CONSTITUTION: A portable terminal(100) having a power-saving function comprises an input part(110), an output part(120), a CDMA module(130), an external interface part(140), a control part(150), and a switching part(160). The input part(110), a user interface to generate an input signal to select or execute a function, comprises a key input part(112) and a microphone(114). The output part(120) comprises an LCD(122) to output display information on the screen and a speaker(126) to output a sound signal. The CDMA module(130) executes call setup if a communication request signal is received from the input part(110) or an external equipment. If call setup is normally made, the CDMA module(130) executes communication with the external equipment. For the external interface part(140), a USB(Universal Serial Bus) port is applicable. The control part(150) controls the overall operations of the input part(110), the output part(120), the CDMA module(130), the external interface part(140), and the switching part(160). The switching part(160) is controlled by the control part(150) or the CDMA module(130) according to either a communication mode or an activation mode.
