Abstract: PURPOSE: A malfunction prevention device and a method for a shift lever of an automatic transmission are provided to prevent a driver from operating the shift lever wrongly without completely moving the shift lever from a P-range to an R-range by turning on a warning lamp with a control unit if pressure detected by a pressure sensor is below a reference value. CONSTITUTION: A malfunction prevention device for a shift lever of an automatic transmission is composed of a P-range sensing switch(10) for detecting if the shift lever is positioned in a P-range; an R-range sensing switch(20) for detecting that the shift lever is in an R-range; a pressure sensor(30) for detecting pressure applied to the shift lever by a driver; and a control unit(40) for judging if the shift lever is moved from the P-range to the R-range according to output signals of the switches and then operating a warning lamp(50) or an AV(Audio and Visual) system(60) according to the pressure detected by the pressure sensor.
