Abstract: The disclosure relates to an electrical switching device, e.g., a generator circuit breaker, and to a method for improved switching-gas cooling. Gas jets are formed by a nozzle body in the exhaust area, are directed against a baffle wall and are swirled. The baffle wall is a component of the switching chamber enclosure and has a high thermal capacity and/or thermal conductivity, so that the switching gas vortices produce a highly efficient switching gas cooling on the baffle wall by turbulent convection. Exemplary embodiments relate inter alia to the design of the baffle wall and of the nozzle body. Advantages include: protection of the switching chamber enclosure against hot gases, improved switching gas cooling, and increased breaking capacity.

Abstract: The circuit breaker includes an auxiliary drive mechanism (3). This mechanism is constructed to reverse the direction of movement of the second arc contact section (2). Reversal takes place during circuit breaking, and occurs when the constricted section (6) is no longer partially blocked by the contact end section (2). The auxiliary drive is an electrodynamic drive. It is alternatively taken from the main drive. The auxiliary drive mechanism includes at least one cam track plate (14). Equations describing the constriction geometry are provided. An independent claim is included for the corresponding method.

Abstract: The method for breaking a current in medium or high-voltage applications uses a switch with a pair of contact members (1,2), at least one of which is moved from a closed position, in which the members are in electrical contact with each other, to an open position where they are separated. An electrical arc is generated during the separation movement. For high currents, the arc is extinguished by a pressurized gas directed towards it, and which is generated by using the energy of the arc itself. For low currents, the arc is extinguished by squeezing it in an area between a first and second insulating body (3,4).
