    Abstract: A process for the production of alcohols and/or aldehydes which comprises subjecting a toluene derivative having an ether linkage or linkages of the general formula: wherein RO is an ether grouping where R stands for a hydrocarbyl group with 1 DIFFERENCE 20 carbon atoms which may carry an inert substituent or substituents and n stands for an integer of 1 DIFFERENCE 2, to auto-oxidation with molecular oxygen in liquid phase to form the corresponding alcohol and/or aldehyde, characterized in that the reaction is carried out by using a lower saturated fatty acid and/or an anhydride thereof as solvent in the presence of a soluble cobalt salt and a bromine ion-supplying substance at a reaction temperature ranging from 30 DEG C. to 200 DEG C. in such manner that the conversion rate of the toluene derivative does not exceed 90%.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To easily obtain the title film at low cost by coating a substrate with an organic solvent solution of a soluble organic iron yttrium compound followed by drying and then annealing treatment to effect the thermal decomposition of said compound. CONSTITUTION:A substrate is coated with an organic solvent solution of a soluble organic iron yttrium compound followed by drying, and then annealing treatment to effect the thermal decomposition of said compound. This compound is, in general, a product from the reaction between (A) an oxygen-contg. organic compound such as polyol, polycarboxylic acid or oxycarboxylic acid,(B) an iron compound and (C) a yttrium compound [pref. a reaction product from a >=10C 1,2-diol or oxycarboxylic acid an iron compound and a yttrium compound].

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the adhesion to a substrate, magnetism, and light-transmissive property of the title film by an easy practical method by applying the organic solvent solution of a soluble organic iron compound to the substrate and thermally decomposing the compound after the solution is dried and annealed. CONSTITUTION:Any organic iron compounds can be used for manufacturing this light- transmissive magnetic iron oxide film when they are soluble in organic solvents and reaction products of such oxygen-bearing organic compounds as polyol, plycarboxylic acid, oxycarboxylic acid, etc., with an iron salt can be cited as the example of the compounds, but reaction products of 1,2-diol containing 10 or more carbon atoms or citric acid with an iron salt are preferable. No specific specification is set to the organic solvent when the solvent can solve the iron salt and organic compound, but lower alcohol, ketone, dioxane, and their mixed solvents having boiling points of 70-150 deg.C are preferable. The magnetic iron oxide film is formed by drying the organic compound applied to a substrate and thermally decomposing the compound after annealing. It is desirable to apply the compound as an organic solvent solution having a fluidity so that the film can uniformly and homogeneously be formed.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the selectivity of the objective compound in the hydrogenative condensation of benzene, by using a catalyst obtained by supporting nickel and iron and/or manganese on a carrier composed of an HY-type zeolite diluted with silica alumina. CONSTITUTION:Nickel and a cocatalyst consisting of iron and/or manganese are supported on an inexpensive carrier obtained by diluting expensive HY-type zeolite with silica alumina, e.g. commercially available silica alumina for FCC to obtain a catalyst. The amount of the nickel is 0.5-20wt%, especially 1-10wt% of the carrier, and that of the cocatalyst is 1-50wt%, especially 3-30wt% of nickel. Cyclohexylbenzene can be produced in a remarkably improved selectivity, suppressing the production of cyclohexane, by carrying out the hydrogenative condensation of benzene in the presence of the above catalyst. The rate of reaction as well as the selectivity can be improved remarkably by adding a dehydrative dessicant to the reaction system.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To manufacture a porous high dispersing metal catalyst of high performance by mixing an oxygen contained organic metal compound and easily reducing metal salt in the liquid of a polar compound having multidentate or crosslinking coordination power and then gelatinizing and heat treating said gel at low temperature. CONSTITUTION:Alcoxide such as gel aluminum and titanium, an oxygen contained organic metal compound such as a diketone compound and easily reducing metal salt such as copper, silver, iron or the like are mixed in polar compound contained solution having multidentate or crosslinking coordination power such as bivalent alcohol or amino at 10-200 deg.C. Then, the hydrolysis is carried out for the same and the whole of sol is gelatinized from uniform sol. Then, said gel is heat treated in reduced atmosphere after low temperature drying at 30-200 deg.C, to scatter a polar compound and reduce the reducing metal salt into metal. Thus, a metal catalyst highly dispersed in a multi-component non-crystalline metal oxide is manufactured, which forms the catalyst of high performance.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:A platinum-carbon catalyst modified with cinchona alkaloid is used to readily conduct asymmetric hydrogenation of alpha-ketolactone to obtain optically active alpha-hydroxylactone such as D-pantolactone which is used as a starting substance for medicines. CONSTITUTION:A platinum-carbon catalyst is modified with a cinchona alkaloid, preferably readily available quinine (-), quinidine (+), cinchonine (+) or cinchonidine and the resultant catalyst is used to effect asymmetric hydrogenation of an alpha-ketolactone in a relatively high asymmetry yield to form optically active alpha-hydroxylactone which is practically used as a starting substance for medicines, food and feed additives. According to the present invention, the modified catalyst is easily prepared, the product is readily isolated.
