    Abstract: A process for the production of alumina includes a method for controlling the specific surface area of alumina. Control of specific surface area is performed by controlling the porous structure of alumina. In the process, an aluminium alkoxide is subjected to hydrolysis for forming an alumina gel. Before hydrolysis a polyether is used as an organic solvent in order to control the porous structure of produced alumina.

    Abstract: A process for preparing a cordierite, which includes dissolving a silicon compound, an aluminum compound and a magnesium compound in a molar ratio of 1:0.7 to 1:0.3 to 0.5 in a complexing agent represented by the formula R(OCH2CH2)nOH, wherein R is an alkyl group and n is an integer of 1 to 4; heating the resulting solution to bring about a ligand exchange reaction of the silicon compound, aluminum compound and magnesium compound with the complexing agent; conducting hydrolysis to form a gel; drying the gel and sintering the dried gel at 800 DEG to 1450 DEG C.

    Abstract: A METHOD FOR THE PREPARATION OF AN AMORPHOUS METAL OXIDE COMPOSITE The invention provides a method for the preparation of a metal oxide composite, e.g. silica-alumina, having high uniformity and porosity in structure. The inventive method comprises forming a homogeneous solution of at least two kinds of oxygen-containing organic metal compounds, e.g. metal alkoxides, in a solvent mixture containing a polar compound having multifunctionality or coordinatively crosslinking power, e.g. hexyleneglycol, together with admixture of water to cause cohydrolysis of the oxygencontaining organic metal compounds so that the homogeneous solution is converted into a sol and then into a gelled coagulum followed by drying and heating the coagulum to dissipate the polar compound. The method is applicable to the preparation of a solid catalyst containing a highly dispersed, catalytically active metal as one of the integral components in the metal oxide composite by the admixture of a readily reducible salt of the catalytically active metal to the solution before hydrolysis and heating the gelled coagulum impregnated with the metal salt in a reducing atmosphere to reduce the salt into the metallic form.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain pure codierite simply and inexpensively by dissolving an organic solvent-soluble silicon compound, Al compound and Mg compound in a given molar ratio in a solvent containing a specific organic ligand, reacting under heating, hydrolyzing, drying formed gel and calcining. CONSTITUTION:A solvent containing an organic ligand (e.g. diethylene glycol monomethyl ether) shown by the formula (R is alkyl; n is >=1 integer) is prepared. Then an organic solvent-soluble silicon compound (e.g. tetraethoxysilane), an aluminum compound (e.g. aluminum isopropoxide) and a magnesium compound (e.g. magnesium diethoxide) in a blending ratio of 5:4:2 are dissolved in the solvent. Then the solution is reacted under heating, hydrolyzed with water, formed gel is dried and finally calcined at >=800 deg.C to give codierite.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To selectively obtain the present compound useful as a raw material for high-functional plastic, etc., by using a silica-alumina catalyst prepared by blending alkoxides of aluminum and silicon in an oxygen-containing organic solvent and hydrolyzing the blend. CONSTITUTION:2-Methylnaphthalene is reacted with an isopropylating agent in a silica-alumina catalyst prepared by blending alkoxides of aluminum and silicon in an oxygen-containing organic solvent such as monovalent - polyvalent alcohols, ketoalcohol or etheralcohol at 20-150 deg.C, preferably 40-80 deg.C and then adding water of 1-100mol., preferably 2-30mol. based on 1mol. alkoxysilane to the blend and subjecting the blend to gellation under the above- mentioned temperature to provide 2-methyl-6-isopropylnaphthalene useful also as a raw material for electrically conductive material in simple treatment, mild reaction and high selectivity.
