    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a high-purity squarylium pigment suitable as, e.g., a recording material for optical discs is high yields, by condensing a specified colorant intermediate through dehydration with squaric acid in an organic solvent under a pressure higher than a specified value. CONSTITUTION:A colorant intermediate of the general formula R-H [wherein R is formula I, II, III or IV, R is C18H37, R is H, CH3 or Cl, R is CH3, R is H or CH3, R is H or Cl, X is C(CH3)2, Se or S, and Y is p- chlorobenzenesulfonic acid], e.g., (2,3,3-trimethyl-1-octadecyl-indolinium) p- chlorobenzenesulfonate, is condensed through dehydration with squaric acid in an organic solvent (e.g., methanol) under a high pressure >=1000kg/cm to obtain a squarylium colorant of formula V.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To enable recording of information in ultrahigh density in a molecular level by using cinnamylideneacetate combined with a hydrocarbon specified in chain length as a light information recording compsn. CONSTITUTION:The cinnamylideneacetic acid combined with a long-chain hydro carbon represented by the formula shown here can be easily synthesized by reacting p-alkyl or p-alkoxybenzaldehyde with 3-ethoxycarbonylallyltri phenylphosphonium halide, and hydrolyzing the resulting cinnamylideneacetic acid deriv. ester. Built-up molecular films optional in thickness can be prepared on a glass or metal base from a monomolecular film by using a Langmuir- Blodgett's device for building up monomolecular films. the prepared ultrathin films has the strong absorption max. in 260-360nm, and when it is irradiated with UV rays in this range, the new absorption max. appears near 250nm wave length on the shorter wavelength side, and vice versa, thus permitting absorption spectra to be changed reversible by using 2 kinds of lights different in wave length.
