Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a high-purity squarylium pigment suitable as, e.g., a recording material for optical discs is high yields, by condensing a specified colorant intermediate through dehydration with squaric acid in an organic solvent under a pressure higher than a specified value. CONSTITUTION:A colorant intermediate of the general formula R-H [wherein R is formula I, II, III or IV, R is C18H37, R is H, CH3 or Cl, R is CH3, R is H or CH3, R is H or Cl, X is C(CH3)2, Se or S, and Y is p- chlorobenzenesulfonic acid], e.g., (2,3,3-trimethyl-1-octadecyl-indolinium) p- chlorobenzenesulfonate, is condensed through dehydration with squaric acid in an organic solvent (e.g., methanol) under a high pressure >=1000kg/cm to obtain a squarylium colorant of formula V.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide an electrode having improved selectivity to oxidation reaction by coating a metal oxide supporting graphite plate with a pyrrole or thiophene polymer film by electrolytic polymn. CONSTITUTION:A metal oxide supporting graphite plate is immersed as the anode in a soln. contg. pyrrole or thiophene and perchlorate or borofluoride, and electric current is supplied by a prescribed quantity (about 0.1-10C) to coat the graphite plate with a pyrrole or thiophene polymer film by electrolytic polymn. Thus, a metal oxide supporting graphite electrode is obtd. The electrode is advantageously applicable to the electrode oxidation reaction of aromatic hydrocarbon.

Abstract: NEW MATERIAL:An electron acceptor shown by formula I (R is long-chain alkyl). EXAMPLE:Octadecyl tetracyanoquinodimethane. USE:An intermediate for synthesizing an electric charge transfer complex compound. The electron acceptor is reacted with an electron donor and a stable monomolecular layer is formed on the surface of water to give an electric charge transfer complex compound having improved electrical conductivity and stability. PREPARATION:A 2-ocatadecyl-1,4-bis(dicyanomethylene)cyclohexane shown by formula II is stirred with triethylamine and bromine in a solvent such as chloroform, etc., to give a compound shown by formula I. Tetrathiafulvalene is perferable as an electron donor to be combined with the electron donor and an electric charge transfer complex compound is shown by formula III.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To electrolytically reduce carbonyl groups in a soln. with high selectivity and little waste after the reaction by carrying out electrolytic reduction in the presence of Sb ions. CONSTITUTION:Carbonyl groups are electrolytically reduced in a soln. in the presence of Sb ions or with an electrode plate with deposited metallic Sb. The Sb ions may be used in the form of a halide or oxide of ter- or quinquevalent Sb and the Sb compd. is added by about 0.001-0.05mol per 1 mol compd. having a carbonyl group as starting material. A protic soln. such as 1:1 acidic alcohol soln. contg. a mineral acid as a supporting electrolyte is used as the solvent. The mineral acid may be dil. hydrochloric acid and the alcohol may be ethanol. A lead electrode plate may be used as the cathode and the anode may be made of platinum. The current density is about 1-15mA/cm and the electrolytic temp. is 0 deg.C to room temp.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the limited kind of color, slow response, repeatability, durability and power efficiency in an electrochromic display element by fixing an org. compd. having a chromophor and an electrolytically polymerizable group as the electrolytically polymerized film. CONSTITUTION:This electrochromic display element consists of an electrolytic cell with an electrode obtained by modifying an org. compd. with the color reversibly changed by an electrochemical redox reaction as a working electrode. The surface of the element is modified with an electrolytically polymerized film by the anodization of a compd. shown by the formula. In the formula, (n) is an integer of 3 to 12, and R and R' are H, CH3O or halogen. Consequently, the cell structure of the electrochromic element is simplified since the modified element is used as the working electrode. Further, since the org. compd. is fixed on the working electrode surface with good adhesion by electrolytic polymerization, the response is quickened, current efficiency is increased, repeatability and durability are improved, and the color developing wavelength is changed by selecting the structure of the chromophor.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To simplify the structure of a cell and to improve low-voltage driving, memory characteristic, etc., by preparing an electrochromic modifying electrode of a two-electron oxidation-reduction system formed of a chemically stable salt. CONSTITUTION:The compds. expressed by formulas I-IV are used for the electrochromic display device consisting of the electrolytic cell in which the electrode formed by modifying an org. compd. allowing a reversible change of the color by an electrochemical redox reaction is used as a working electrode. In formulas I-IV, X denotes respectively halogen, acetic acid, perchloric acid anion; R denotes an alkyl, acetyl group, aryl group, nitrogenous heterocylic group; R denotes a hydrogen atom., methoxy group; Ar, Ar' denote an aryl group, nitrogenous heterocylic group. The aryl group and the nitrogenous heterocylic group contain a condensed ring and substitution products of alkyl, methoxy, halogen, nitro, etc. The redox type org. compd. can be thereby fixed to the electrode surface and, therefore, the structure of the cell is simplified and the driving voltage is lowered.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To enable the selection of an electrode material ensuring the selectivity of a product in an extended range by subjecting a carbonyl compd. to indirect electrolytic reduction. CONSTITUTION:A carbonyl compd. is reduced in an acidic alcohol solvent system in the presence of zinc chloride at the reduction potential of zinc ions to selectively produce carbinol. The indirect electrolytic reduction is carried out in an electrolytic cell provided with a glass filter diaphragm. In the cell, a plate of a metal having low hydrogen overvoltage such as Pt, Pd, Au or Co, preferably a Pt plate is used as the cathode and a Pt plate is generally used as the anode. Constant-current electrolysis is generally adopted and the quantity of electric current to be supplied is 5-20F per 1mol. carbonyl compd. as starting material. By this method, the selectivity of the product is ensured without using a special electrode.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To prompt the formation of J associated body and to transform a part of the area of thin film selectively to associate by controlling the associated state of org. dye molecules in Langmuir-Blodgett's film which is a typical example of org. ultra thin film by the impression of magnetic field. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic field is impressed to associated org. dye molecules in Langmuir-Blodgett's film which is a typical example of org. ultra thin film to prompt the formation of J associated body. An org. dye having the structure for forming the J associated body is used as the org. dye molecule. Suitable org. dye molecule is a molecule of cyanine dye, merocyanine dye, or squarylium dye. Further, the magnetic field to be impressed to the associated org. dye molecules is regulated to >=100 gauss. Thus, the formation of J associated body is prompted and selective transformation of a part of the area of thin film to associate has become possible.

USE:An electron acceptor that gives charge-transfer complex which can form monomolecular layer stably on the water surface. PREPARATION:The reaction of 1,4-dimethoxybenzene of formula II with R-COCl gives a compound of formula III. The product is catalytically hydrogenated in the presence of a palladium-carbon catalyst into a compound of formula IV. Then, the compound is converted into compounds of formula V, VI and VII in order. Finally, the product is allowed to react with an electron donor, preferably tetramethylterathiafluvalene to give the objective charge transfer complex of formula I.
