    Abstract: An assembly and method are provided to moderate the output from an airbag inflator (12) by means of a compliance chamber pressure vessel (36) formed about the gas exit area (30) of the inflator. The compliance chamber (40) has an exit area comprising holes (60) through which the maximum gaseous mass flow rate is no more than 300% of the average. During the first 10 milliseconds after the inflator begins exhausting gas, the total mass flow through the exit area is at least 20% less than the total mass flow through that area.

    Abstract: A gas generant body (1), preferably in the form of a circular, washer-shaped disc, having a plurality of similar, flat-surfaced projections (2) equally spaced and radially equidistant about the periphery of one or both sides of the body. The spaced projections are defined by curved or arcuate walls (3) emanating from the center of the generant body which flare outwardly to the body's perimeter, each having an angular arc length (d5-d10) greater than the space (5) therebetween. The outer edge of each projection is preferably contiguous with the perimeter (7) of the body. When the projections are on both sides as is preferred, the projections on one side are preferably in a staggered or offset relationship to those on the other side. A stack or assembly of the multiprojection generant wafers may be formed into an array for use in a gas generator for an automobile gas bag inflator. Each generant wafer acts as its own spacer, can be assembled independent of orientation, will not mesh or interlock with adjacent wafers and does not need extra inflator hardware.

    Abstract: The device stores a gas generating material in a first chamber and stores a supply of gas under pressure in a second chamber. When ignited, the gas generating material produces a hot gas which contains particulate material. To effect particulate removal, housed within the container and extending about the gas exit nozzle of the first chamber is a filter structure. The filter structure forms inner and outer mixing zones within the second chamber wherein portions of the stored gas mix with the appropriately generated and/or treated gas, forming inflation gas. The inflation gas in turn is passed through a diffuser and into the vehicle occupant restraint.
