Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved method for forming a mixture of fuel and a fluid oxidant in an inflator and the inflator comprising or being able to form such a mixture of fuel and the oxidant. SOLUTION: Inflation apparatus and method are provided wherein a hydrocarbon-containing inflation gas-producing mixture is formed via the fluid extraction of the hydrocarbon from a substrate material. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inflator apparatus wherein molecular weight of mixed gas contained therein is manipulated, by varying relative amounts of various constituents thereof. SOLUTION: Through such manipulation and tight control of mixed gas molecular weight, performance of the inflator can be properly tuned so as to desirably control or influence a speed of deployment of an associated airbag cushion, and minimize or reduce damage to the associated airbag cushion caused by an excessive deployment speed, as well as satisfy the relatively onerous inflation demands required for proper or desired operation of various close proximity airbag cushions or inflatable restraint devices. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To safely and accurately fill a storage chamber, that is, a fuel storage container, by supplying fuel through a capillary tube for discharging most of fuel in the lower side of a fuel liquid surface raised in the fuel storage container. SOLUTION: In a second station 54, a filling head 64 is disposed on the top part of a container 112. A needle is lowered into the container 112 so as to reach a position within a distance 1/10 of the container 112 from the bottom part. Liquid fuel is supplied via the needle. Only after a sufficient amount of fuel liquid to be mixed with fuel in the container 112 is discharged from the needle, the retreating of needle from the container 112 is started. That is, by surely supplying most of liquid fuel filling the container 112 based on fuel discharging from the needle in the lower side of the fuel level in the container 112, the possibility of gas or vapor entering the flowing-in liquid is eliminated and the formation of bubbles or other air bubbles in the supplied liquid is prevented.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for inflating an inflatable device (10) which involve a heat source (40) composed of a load of fuel material and an initiator (42) is actuatable to be in heat transmitting communication such as to initiate dissociation of a gas source material (14) to form at least one gaseous dissociation product used to inflate the inflatable device.
Abstract:
Systems for use in leak detection and methods for leak detection are provided wherein a radioactive trace material is externally applied to a wall of a chamber which contains a fluid at a relatively high internal pressure.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for inflating a vehicular inflatable device (10) are provided wherein inflation gas is produced via a dissociative material wherein an initiator (40) includes an enhanced fuel pyrotechnic formulation which, in addition to initiating dissociation of at least a portion of a quantity of gas source material (14) contained within the inflator, forming dissociation products used to inflate the device (10), also forms particles to interact with one or more of at least a portion of the remaining quantity of gas source material (14) contained within the inflator and the dissociation products to form additional inflation products for inflating the inflatable device.
Abstract:
Gas generating compositions containing or including a sufficient quantity of a non-nitrate containing ammonia source whereby, upon reaction of the gas generating composition, NOx products are present in the product gas in a reduced amount as compared to reaction product gas resulting from reaction of the same composition without said quantity of non-nitrate containing ammonia source. Also disclosed are associated methods of reducing NOx products present in an effluent of a gas generating composition that upon combustion forms gas useful for inflating a vehicle occupant safety restraint device.
