Abstract: Method and apparatus for capturing and processing images of terrain 6, comprising: using each of a plurality of cameras (14, 5 16, 18, 20) to capture an image of a surface of the terrain thereby producing a plurality of camera images. Each camera image comprises a plurality of pixels and are registered to create a plurality of sets of registered pixels, which are then classified. Ground penetrating radar (8), captures a radar image (24) of the terrain and a detection algorithm is performed on the radar image (24) to detect an at least partially subterranean object or a terrain feature (26) in the radar image. The detected object or terrain feature (26) is associated with at least one classified set of registered pixels (28, 30), preferably by projecting at least part of the object or terrain feature and at least one camera image onto a common plane. Classification of the pixel sets may be achieved by determining a spectral signature and comparing it to a spectral stored in a database. Preferably, the frequency range of each camera overlaps at least partially with that of another camera. The camera may respectively detect the following frequencies: ultraviolet, visible light, and infrared.

Abstract: A lightning protection system for a vehicle 2 (e.g. a low-observable aircraft) includes a vehicle part 4 comprising a relatively electrically conductive core 6 and a relatively non-electrically conductive outer skin 8. The outer skin 8 surrounds, at least to some extent, the core 6 such that the core 6 is not visible from outside the vehicle 2. The lightning protection system comprises one or more relatively electrically conductive members 10 wherein each of the one or more members 10 is electrically connected to the core 6 and a portion of each of the one or more members 10 is exposed at an outer surface of the external skin 8. The electrically conductive members have a relatively large cross section where they connect to the core and taper to a point at the external skin. The system is intended to allow a lightning strike (16, fig 3) to pass from one external point to the core and exit via a different location at the vehicle extremity.

Abstract: A system comprising a low observable aircraft (2) having its surfaces oriented at a limited number of directions, and a lightning diverter strip (4, 22, 30) comprising a plurality of electrically conductive elements (8, 24, 32) arranged in a spaced apart relation, each of the electrically conductive elements (8, 24, 32) comprising an elongate portion. The lightning diverter strip (4, 22, 30) is attached to the aircraft in such a way that the conductive elements (8, 24, 32) are located on an exposed outer surface of the lightning diverter strip (4, 22, 30) and exposed to atmospheric conditions. For each conductive element (8, 24, 32), a long axis of the elongate portion of that conductive element (8, 24, 32) is substantially parallel with a surface of the aircraft.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing image processing, the method comprising: positioning a mark onto a surface (for example, by projecting a laser dot or laser lines onto the surface) then using a first sensor (e.g. a UV camera), generating a first image of the surface with at least a portion of the mark in the first image and a second sensor (e.g. a visible-light camera), to generate a second image of the surface with at least a portion of the mark in the second image. A process is then performed that is dependent upon the respective positions of the at least a portion of the mark in the first image and the second image, namely aligning the two images according to the position of the laser dot. The laser mark may alternatively be in the form of two non-parallel lines and may have a non-symmetrical shape. The alignment process may involve image transformation or movement of the image sensors. Furthermore in an alternative embodiment the laser mark may be projected at different time steps in a time period with each image being captured during separate portions of such a time period and the images may be time-aligned based on the respective positions of the laser mark. The different time steps may be selected by a pseudo random sequence. The sensors may be of different types e.g. UV, Infra-red, visible light and may be mounted in an aircraft.
