Abstract: In order to produce glossy pigments based on platelike silicate substrates provided with several coatings, the substrates already coated with a first layer of colourless or selectively absorbing metal oxide are (a) at first coated with a second, non-selectively absorbing layer essentially composed of carbon, metal and/or metal oxide, and then (b) are coated, if required, with a third layer of colourless or selectively absorbing metal oxide. The carbon layer (step a) is applied by thermal decomposition of oxygenated hydrocarbons which contain at least one oxygen atom for each pair of carbon atoms. The metal layer (step a) is applied by gas phase decomposition of volatile compounds of said metals in an inert gas. The metal oxide layer (steps a and/or b) is applied by gas phase decomposition of volatile compounds of said metals in the presence of oxygen, steam or mixtures thereof. In case (a), said layers are applied on substrates already coated with a first metal oxide layer and in case (b), said layers are applied on substrates coated with a second, non-selectively absorbing layer (a). Also disclosed are special pigments, the production and use of such glossy pigments for colouring lacquers, printing inks, plastics, decorative cosmetic compositions, glass and ceramic products.

Abstract: Described are particles (I) suitable for use as carrier particles in electrophotographic processes and made up of: a) a magnetic core and b) an envelope consisting of aluminium oxide, chromium oxide, molybdenum oxide, tungsten oxide, silicon oxide, tin oxide or zirconium oxide or a mixture of these oxides. Also described are particles (II) made up of: a) a magnetic core and b) an envelope of titanium oxide and produced by decomposing titanium tetraalcoholates in the gas phase by means of water and/or oxygen in the presence of the moving cores. The invention also concerns the manufacture of the particles and their use in two-component developers for electrophotographic processes.
