PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a pale blue gloss pigment having high perspiration resistance useful as a coating material especially a coloring coating material, etc., of a lacquer for an automobile by reacting a silicate platelet coated with reduced titania with a specific silane. SOLUTION: This pale blue gloss pigment is produced by using a silicate platelet coated with reduced titania as a base and reacting the silicate platelet with a silane of the formula Ra SiXb [R is a 1-10C alkyl substituted by glycidoxy, amino, etc., at μ-position; X is a 1-4C alkoxy; (a) is 1 or 2; (b) is 2 or 3 with the proviso that (a)+(b)=4] (preferably, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, etc.) by heating in a reductive atmosphere. The reaction is preferably per-formed by fluidizing the reduced platelets in a fluidizing reaction vessel by nitrogen, heating to 150-300 deg.C and further introducing the gasified silane and water vapor to the vessel. Moreover, muscovite flakes obtained by wet milling is preferably used as the silicate platelet. The reduction of the silicate platelet coated by the titania is preferably performed by ammonia gas.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To directly obtain the subject compound through the one-pot process by reaction between a specific halosilicon, a carboxylic acid salt or its anhydride and an alcohol without isolation of tetracyloxysilane, as side-reactions are suppressed. SOLUTION: A halosilicon of the formula: SiX4 (X is fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine) (for example, tetrachlorosilane) is allowed to react with compounds of the formula: MR R is formula I [Z is an unsubstituted, or a halogen- monosubstituted or polysubstituted 1-20C alkyl, a 2-20C alkenyl, a 2-20C alkynyl, a group of formula: -(CH2 )p A (p is 0-6; A is an unsubstituted or alkyl-substituted 3-20 membered hydrocarbon ring)]; M is a metal in I and II main groups in the periodic table} and a compound of the formula: HR [R is the formula O-Y (Y is the same as Z)] or an anhydride of formula II and a compound of the formula: HR to give the objective acyloxyalkoxysilane represented by the formula III (m, n are each 1-3; m+n is 4) through the one-pot process.

(A) Prepn. of blue-shade gloss pigments is obtd. by treatment of silicatic flakes which are coated with titanium dioxide (the titanium dioxide coating having a geometric layer thickness of 10-60 nm) with a reducing gas mixt. (which contains a vaporised organic cpd. and ammonia) at 800-900 degrees C. (B) Blue-shade gloss pigment is based on silicatic flakes which comprise a reduced titanium dioxide and has a geometric layer thickness of 10-60 nm and a CIELAB colour value -2 ≤ a* ≤ b* ≤ -20 (measurement angle 20 degrees ,'standard light type'D65).

The invention relates to a method of passivating metal pigments with respect to compounds containing hydroxyl groups, which is characterized in that the metal pigments are treated in the gas phase with passivating compounds. The procedure of the invention enables highly effective passivation to be achieved simply.
