Abstract: The invention relates to a process for rapidly letting-down the pressure in continuous high pressure polymerization systems for the polymerization of ethylene. In this process, the let-down hot reaction mixture is passed into an expansion vessel in such a way that the jet of let-down hot reaction mixture issuing from the let-down line is led into the partially water-filled expansion vessel at an angle of from 0 DEG to 45 DEG to the water surface, so that the jet does not enter below the surface but must touch or strike it. The method described makes it possible to let the mixture down partially and thus to slow down the decomposition in the case of explosive decomposition reactions occurring in the polymerization system.

Abstract: Ethylene copolymers contg. is not >30 wt. % vinyl acetate are prepd. by (a) copolymerisation of ethylene and vinyl acetate at >800 atmos., 150-350 degrees C and a residence time of is not >100 seconds, and (b) passing the prod. from the reaction zone into a cooling zone at 500 atmos. and 150-250 degrees C(200-235 degrees C), and, immediately after the cooling zone, into a high-press. prod. sepn. zone (A); the residence time in the cooling zone and zone A is 2-10 minutes. The prod. is passed from zone A, through a low-press. prod. sepn. zone (B) and into a discharge extruder (C). B and C are connected directly together, without intermediate closure means and the height of filling of B with reaction mixt. is adjusted by discharge from C. The copolymer is esp. used for films. The prod. is very homogeneous and gives films of good quality.

Abstract: Prodn. of ternary copolymers (I) of over 60 (wt.)% ethylene (II), 1-20% t-butyl (meth)acrylate (III) and 1-10% (meth) acrylic acid (IV) involves the copolymerisation of (II) and (III) at 200-350 degrees C and over 800 atmos. After polymerisation, the mixt. is passed into a cooling zone at 200-250 degrees C and under 500 atmos., and then directly into a high press. prod. sepn. zone (A), the dwell time is these 2 zones being 2-10 mins. The improvement comprising passing the mixt. from (A) through a low press. prod. sepn. zone (B) into a discharge extruder (C). B and C are interconnected directly, without a shut-off and the level of the mixt. in B is controlled by the discharge from C. (I) are used esp. as hot melt adhesives, e.g. as thin films, for metals, ceramics, paper, textiles, plastics, wood, glass etc. The prod. has excellent film properties, i.e. homogeneity, even after long reactor operations periods.

Abstract: A process for the manufacture of copolymers of ethylene with vinyl acetate at pressures above 800 atmospheres and at from 150 DEG to 350 DEG C, using mean residence times of up to at most 100 seconds. The reaction mixture obtained from the polymerization is kept for from 2 to 10 minutes at from 150 DEG to 250 DEG C under a pressure below 500 atmospheres. Homogeneous ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers are obtained without the formation of substantial amounts of free acetic acid by decomposition of the vinyl acetate.

Abstract: A process for the manufacture of ethylene polymers by homopolymerization and copolymerization of ethylene at pressures of from 500 to 5,000 bars and at from 50 DEG to 450 DEG C, with subsequent isolation of the polymers in high pressure product isolation zones and low pressure product isolation zones. The various parallel product isolation zones are at different temperatures, and the mean product residence times in the zones may be identical or different. Very different products, in amounts which can be chosen according to requirements, and with mutually independent polymer properties, can be obtained using only one high pressure polymerization system.
