Abstract: In dyeing paper, the basic dyestuff used is a 2-(3-phenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazol-5-yl)- benzene (1-azo-3)2-hydroxy-pyrid-6-one of formula (I): (where R1 = H, halogen, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, DF3 or NO2; R2 = H, halogen or NO2; R3 = H or 1-4C alkyl; R4 = CN, carbamoyl or acetyl; X1 = H, 1-10C alkyl (opt. substd. by OH and/or with one or two O atoms in the chain), 5-7C cycloalkyl or an L-A gp. with L = linear or branched 1-6C alkylene and A = gp. contg. amino gps.; X2 = H, halogen, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, NO2 or L-A; at least one of X1 and X2 = L-A). USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) have high affinity for paper and give almost colourless waste liquor, making them esp. suitable for continuous dyeing. The coloured paper can be bleached well with both chlorine and hydrosulphite bleaches. The dyeing has good general fastness and high clarity and colour strength.
