    Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the production of bead-shaped expanded polystyrene by suspension polymerisation of styrol in the presence of 1 to 5 wt. % of a hydrocarbon with 4 to 6 C atoms and 0.5 to 3.5 wt. % of a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon with a boiling point above 70°C, but in the absence of a chain initiator, giving rise to a reduction in the molecular weight of the polystyrene.
