Abstract: Preparation of styrene polymers containing a propellant by polymerisation of styrene with comonomers, in aqueous suspension, with addition, (at start or during polymerisation) of amphiphilic organic emulsifying agent containing hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups, or a polymer carrying a polar group, (miscible in water), so the suspended styrene droplets contain finely distributed water particles.

Abstract: Expanded styrene polymers which have a density of less than 25 g/l and a thermal conductivity λ, determined at 10° C. in accordance with DIN 52612, of less than 32 mW/m*K, and also a process for producing them.

Abstract: In the preparation of expanded polystyrene(EPS) in the presence of graphite particles and at least two peroxides which are broken down to radicals during the first stage of aqueous suspension polymerization, early polymerizate formation occurs and hinders a critical decrease in viscosity when the temperature rises, although the peroxides are not sufficiently stable unless cooled to room temperature. In the preparation of expanded polystyrene(EPS) in the presence of peroxides which are broken down to radicals during the first stage of aqueous suspension polymerization early polymerizate formation occurs and a critical decrease in viscosity when the temperature rises is hindered, although the peroxides are not sufficiently stable unless cooled to room temperature. The styrene mixture with up to 20% by wt. of comonomers in aqueous suspension is polymerized in the presence 0.1-25 wt.% of graphite particles and at least two organic peroxides breaking down at different temperatures.
