Abstract: The copolymers have mol. wt. of 1000-10000 and a gel point of 15 degrees C, and are made by polymerising at 100-160 degrees C, at least temporarily under reduced pressure and at reflux, of a mixture of (a) 55-97 wt% acrylic acid esters of 3-12C non-tertiary alkanols; (b) 3-25 wt% of >=1 (meth)acrylic acid ester contg. a OH grp.; and (c) 0-20 wt% other monoethylenically unsatd. monomers, in the presence of free radical catalysts and opt. polymerisation regulators and solvents. The resulting polymers are completely compatible with polyetherols (made e.g. by reacting epoxypropane or epoxyethane with polyols) and may be used in plasticisers, e.g. in polyacrylates and polyurethanes, and in coatings, primers, adhesives and sealants.

Abstract: 1440768 Aqueous dispersions of ester polymers BASF AG 15 Nov 1973 [16 Nov 1972] 52977/73 Heading C3P An aqueous dispersion of a polymer of a mono-olefinically unsaturated carboxylic ester is prepared by emulsion polymerization of said ester in the presence of (a) 0À05 to 7% of a non-ionic emulsifier (b) 0À05 to 5% of an anionic emulsifier (c) 0À01 to 5% of a protective colloid based on an N-vinyl pyrrolidone polymer and (d) 0À01 to 7% of a hydroxyl containing protective colloid which is a polyvinyl alcohol, a water-soluble partially saponified vinyl acetate polymer or a mixture thereof, said percentages being by weight of the total weight of monomer. The non-ionic emulsifier may be an adduct of 25 moles of ethylene oxide and 1 mole of pisooctyl phenol, C 18 fatty alcohol or a fatty alcohol mixture of C 16 -C 19 alcohols, 50% of which' are saturated, and the anionic emulsifier may be the sodium salt of the sulphuric acid monoester of the adduct of 25 moles of ethylene oxide and 1 mole of p-isooctyl or p-nonyl phenol. Examples describe the production of copolymers of (1) vinyl acetate, vinyl 2-ethylhexanate and crotonic acid, (2) ethyl acrylate, acrylic acid and sodium vinylsulphonate, (3) vinyl acetate, dibutyl maleate, acrylic acid and sodium vinyl sulphonate, (4) styrene, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, acrylic acid and sodium vinyl sulphonate, (5) vinyl acetate, n-butyl acrylate, acrylic acid and sodium vinyl sulphonate, (6) as (5) plus butanediol-1,4-diacrylate, and (7) vinyl acetate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and acrylic acid.

Abstract: 1316590 Unsaturated sulphito-betaines BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 18 Sept 1970 [20 Sept 1969] 44628/70 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises olefinically unsaturated sulphito-betaines, particularly those having the formula where X is -O- or -NH-, R 1 is an optionally substituted vinyl group, R 2 and R 3 each represent an alkyl group or together with the linking N atom form a heterocyclic ring which optionally contains at least one further hetero atom, R 4 is H, a phenyl radical, a carbamoyl radical, or an alkyl or alkenyl radical having up to 4 C atoms and optionally substituted by a halogen atom, an amido group, an epoxy group or a phenyl radical, and n is an integer from 1 to 18. The moiety R 1 -COX- is preferably an acyloxy or acylamino radical derived from an olefinically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid or dicarboxylic acid having 3-5 carbon atoms (e.g. acrylic, methacrylic, maleic, fumaric or itaconic acid). The sulphitobetaines can be prepared by reacting (a) equimolar amounts of sulphur dioxide and an alkylene oxide with (b) an olefinically unsaturated tertiary amine.
