    Abstract: The invention comprises compounds of formula in which R1 represents an alkyl radical with 1 to 2 carbon atoms, R2 a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical with 1 to 3 carbon atoms or a hydroxy-substituted alkyl radical, R3 a cyclohexyl or cyclooctyl group or a group where X represents a hydrogen or chlorine atom, a hydroxyl group, or an alkyl, alkylene or an alkoxy radical containing 1 to 2 carbon atoms, and n represents 1, 2, or 3, specifically, N-p-chlorophenyl-, N-3,4-dichlorophenyl-, N-phenyl-, N-m-toyl-, N-m-(vinylphenyl)-, N-p-toyl-N1-methyl - N1-isobutinylureas. They may be prepared by the reaction of aromatic isocyanates with butinylamines or of aromatic amines with N-alkyl-N-butinylcarbamic acid derivatives such as the chlorides, in the presence of sodium or potassium alcoholates and tertiary amines. The compounds are effective as selective herbicides and may be used for post-emergence treatment.ALSO:Herbicidal compositions comprise compounds of formula in which R1 represents an alkyl radical containing 1 to 2 carbon atoms, R2 a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical containing 1 to 3 carbon atoms or a hydroxy-substituted alkyl radical, and R3 a cyclo-hexyl or cyclo-octyl group or the group where X represents a hydrogen or chlorine atom, a hydroxyl group, or an alkyl, alkylene or alkoxy radical containing 1 to 2 carbon atoms and n represents one of the integers 1, 2 or 3, specifically N - p - chlorophenyl - N - 3,4 - di - chlorophenyl-, N-phenyl-, N-m-tolyl-, N-m-(vinylphenyl) - N - p - tolyl - N1 - methyl - N1 - isobutinyl urea, which may be used with other weed-killers such as chloro-(methyl)-phenoxyalkyl carboxylic acid derivatives, higher chlorinated carboxylic acids, e.g. a ,a -dichloro butyric acid inorganic salts such as chlorates or borax, or phenylcarbamic acid esters. They may be used as aqueous dispersions, dissolved in organic liquids, and mixed with emulsifiers, or with dry carriers as a powder. The treatment of weeds and soil infested with weeds, with aqueous dispersions using sodium lignin sulphonate as dispersing agent shows selective herbicidal results.

    Abstract: Production of very pure butanediol -1,4 by distillation of the crude product, obtained by hydrogenation of butine -2-diol-1,4 in aq. soln., with removal of water and cpds. boiling below 120 degrees C. Process is improved by subjecting the product to a subsequent three-stage fractional distillation. In the first column, fraction A contg. 60-90 wt.% of total butanediol and components boiling below the b.pt. of butanediol and fraction B contg. 40-10 wt.% of total butanediol and higher boiling components are obtained. In the second column, fraction A is separated into a head fraction contg. low-boiling components and a still residue being high purity butanediol. In the third column, fraction B is separated into high-boiling components and butanediol, which is pref. returned to the first distillation stage. Prodn. of polyesters or polyurethanes. High-purity, water-free butanediol is obtained from the second column; less pure butanediol obtained from the third column, can be recycled or used for the prodn. of THF or butyrolactone.

    Abstract: Compounds of the general formula wherein R1 represents a methyl, methoxy or isobutynyl radical, R2 represents a C1 to C4 alkyl radical optionally substituted by a hydroxyl group, a C3 or C4 alkenyl radical bearing two or three chlorine atoms, or the 2,3,6-trichlorobenzyl radical, X represents a hydrogen or chlorine atom and the R2SCH2- and X-groups are in the m or p positions relative to the amido group, may be prepared by heating N - chloromethylphenyl- or N - chloromethyl-chlorophenyl - N1 - dimethyl or -N1 - methyl-N1-isobutynyl -ureas with the corresponding alkenyl- or trichlorobenzyl-mercaptans or their metal salts in the presence of acid binding agents, e.g. trialkylamines. The compounds of the invention have herbicidal activity.ALSO:Herbicidal compositions contain compounds of the general formula wherein R1 represents a methyl, methoxy or isobutynyl radical, R2 represents a C1 to C4 alkyl radical optionally substituted by a hydroxyl group, a C3 or C4 alkenyl radical bearing two or three chlorine atoms, or the 2, 3, 6-trichloro-benzyl radical, X represents a hydrogen or chlorine atom and the R2SCH2- and X-groups are in the m or p positions relative to the amido group, in admixture with conventional carriers. The compositions may also contain other, unspecified, active substances, fertilizers and emulsifiers and dispersing agents, e.g. the salts of alkylbenzene-sulphonic acids and of ammonium compounds, oxalkylated phenol derivatives and sodium lignin sulphonate.
