Abstract: Manufacture of particulate polyethylene by polymerizing ethylene in an agitated bed of dry particulate polyethylene by means of a catalyst system comprising (1) a particulate inorganic carrier and (2) a Ziegler catalyst applied to said carrier. The catalyst system is used in the form of an intimate mixture of the catalyst system with a particulate ethylene polymer which does not soften at the polymerization temperature used, the particles in said mixture being coated with a saturated hydrocarbon wax which is solid at 30 DEG C but liquid at the polymerization temperature used. This process makes it possible to obtain particulate polyethylene having a desirable particle size distribution.

Abstract: Particulate olefin polymers are prepared by catalytic polymerization of monoolefins in an auxiliary liquid containing the monomers to be polymerized in dissolved form and the particulate polymer product in suspended form. The reaction mixture is recycled in a loop to which the starting materials are fed and from which the particulate polymer formed is removed. The essential features are (a) that a side stream is branched off from the loop, (b) that the side stream is caused to pass through a separating zone in which particulate olefin polymer is separated by centrifugal acceleration at temperatures and pressures in the same range as present in the loop and (c) that the separated particulate olefin polymer is discharged through flashing means.

Abstract: 1404028 Particulate Zeigler catalyst-wax compositions BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODAFABRIK AG 12 Dec 1972 [13 Dec 1971] 57257/72 Heading C3P A Zeigler catalyst, preferably supported on an inorganic carrier, is obtained in particulate form embedded in a wax by (a) forming a melt at 40‹ to 120‹ C. of a wax melting above 30‹ C. and the Zeigler catalyst, (b) passing the melt continuously, e.g. as a stream of droplets, into a liquefied gas, inert to the catalyst and wax, having a temperature of -30‹ to -200‹C. and in motion at a modified Reynolds number of from 3À4.10 3 to 5À10 4 , and (c) recovering the particulate catalyst composition from the liquid, e.g. by allowing the gas to evaporate. The product has a particle diameter in the range 0À1 to 5 mm. and may be used for polymerization of olefins, e.g. ethylene and propylene, the catalyst being freed from the wax by melting. In examples, waxes used are paraffin wax (m.p. 69‹ to 73‹ C.) or a mixture thereof with a polyvinyl ether wax (m.p. 56‹ C), the liquefied gas is nitrogen at - 196‹ C. or liquefied propane at -78‹ C., and the catalysts are magnesium oxide- or magnesium aluminium oxide-supported mixtures of titanium tetrachloride and aluminium triethyl or diethyl aluminium chloride.

A method for the production of a flat structural sandwich comprises continuously preparing sheeting 4 by means of a screw extruder 2 at a material temperature of from 120 to 220 C. from a polyethylene having a density of from 0.918 to 0.930 g./cm. 3 and melt index (ASTM D 1238-65 T) of from 0.2 to 5, continuously covering the sheeting on each surface by a pair of rollers 7 with a film 6 having a thickness of 0À01 to 0.2 mm. of a terpolymer containing 60 to 90% by weight of ethylene units, 0.5 to 20% by weight of units of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid e.g. acrylic acid and 0À5 to 20% by weight of units of an ester of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid e.g. t-butyl acrylate, the resultant laminate being continuously covered on each surface by a pair of rollers 9 with metal sheeting 8 e.g. aluminium, copper, brass or steel, having a thickness of from 0.05 to 2.5 mm. and at a temperature of from 100 to 250 C., the whole being bonded into a sandwich construction by the rollers 9 under a pressure of from 5 to 50 kp/cm., the product being cooled in cooling zone 10 to a temperature of less than 60 C. and cut into panels by cutting means 11.
